Gilbert & Sullivan Music at Pequot Library, Nov. 1

Southport, CT -- Music at Pequot Library will feature an evening of song and fun with the Troupers Light Opera on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 7:30pm. It will be an evening of operetta: Gilbert and Sullivan and friends. This concert is part of the "Music at Pequot Library" 2014-2015 Season.

Enjoy operettas by talented performers, including selections from all of Gilbert and Sullivan's 14 operettas as well as pieces that influenced them. Musical director for this performance, James Cooper, said they want to show the public, “How much fun Gilbert and Sullivan are. We have chosen lively numbers and the music is amazingly good and deliciously beautiful!” 18 singers will perform in Pequot Library’s Auditorium/Concert Hall for this evening of operettas.

The story of how the Troupers Light Opera began is as fanciful and “topsy-turvy” as a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Yet this musical enterprise has been performing for 70 years. When Fred Scharmer (1914 – 2012) returned from World War II, he told his wife, Ida, that he wanted to experience a different type of drama than that he had known on the battlefield, and had the idea of starting an acting group. She had been playing and singing Gilbert and Sullivan with the Guild of Seven Arts, and before the war they had both performed with the Little Theater of Noroton. They agreed to found a new group with Ida finding the women and Fred, the men, and in 1946 Troupers Light Opera began performing in homes throughout Darien. By 1950 Troupers had become so popular that they recruited members of the Norwalk Symphony for the orchestra and began building sets for the performances.
