Evangeline Harlan Dillingham, an accomplished pianist and the daughter of former Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan, died Sunday, June 14, 2015 in Hingham, MA. She was 83.
Eve was active throughout her life in the classical music community in Connecticut and New York. A passionate supporter of young musicians, she helped to establish the Heida Hermanns International Music Competition, which recognizes outstanding talent of those aged 19-30. She served on the Board and as President of The Connecticut Alliance for Music (CAM) and oversaw the creation of its educational outreach program, which brought professional artists to inner-city schools to engage children in classical music
Eve studied piano at The New England Conservatory and with composer and pianist David Barnett. She performed in a variety of professional ensembles including the Concord Chamber Players. She was an active presence at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont and hosted many of its participants at musical gatherings at her family’s large converted barn in East Dover. She continued this tradition at the home she and her late husband, Frank Dillingham, a restorer of fine keyboard instruments, designed specifically for the performance of music.
A memorial service to celebrate Eve’s life was conducted July 25th at the Unitarian Church in Westport.
