Westport Cinema Initiative to Host Screening of IN & OUT, Jan. 28

Westport, CT - On Saturday, January 28 at 4pm, the Westport Cinema Initiative will host a screening and talkback of In & Out, starring Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Tom Selleck, Matt Dillon and the late Debbie Reynolds.

Written by Paul Rudnick and directed by Frank Oz, the film is being shown in partnership with the Westport Library as part of the month-long WestportREADS exploration of the book Bettyville by George Hodgman.  The screening will take place at Westport’s Town Hall at 110 Myrtle Avenue.

PG-13, 1 hour 30 minutes

The film tells the story of high school English teacher Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), who questions his sexuality after a former student and hometown hero (Matt Dillon) wins an Academy Award and, in the midst of his acceptance speech praising the teacher’s influence, inadvertently “outs” him. This comes as quite a surprise to Howard’s fiancée (Joan Cusack), his parents (Debbie Reynolds and Wilfred Brimley), the town, and, most surprisingly, Howard himself.

Tickets $8 Charter Members, $10 General Public

Released in 1997, the PG-13 rated film explores sexuality, stereotypes and community with humor and compassion. Joan Cusack was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

A talkback with award-winning filmmaker Douglas Tirola and writer and award-winning columnist Dan Woog will immediately follow the screening.  “The film’s themes parallel those explored in Bettyville and provide a great perspective for discussion,” said Sandy Lefkowitz, Executive Director of The Westport Cinema Initiative.

WestportREADS is dedicated to strengthening the community through the shared experience of a book or an author.

The screening is sponsored by Jeffrey Peterson.  WestportREADS is funded by the estate of Jerry A. Tishman.
