Creativity Abounds at Fairfield Woods Branch Library

The Fairfield Woods Branch Library has been yarn stormed! Also known as knit bombing, yarn storming is a type of knitter’s and crocheter’s graffiti that employs colorful displays of yarn or fiber rather than chalk or paint.

Many community knitters, mostly from the active Branch Library knitting group, Purls of Wisdom, used their yarn and their talent to create colorful pieces that were then connected and attached to one of the trees in front of the Fairfield Woods Branch Library, 1147 Fairfield Woods Road.

The installation was put together by Library staff and volunteers to remind the public that the Fairfield Woods Branch Library is a creative place. The facility has a variety of craft-related programming and may be the first library in the state to loan knitting needles and crochet hooks from its collection.

The Purls of Wisdom group meets every Thursday from 10 am to noon. If you are an advanced knitter or just learning, this is a great group to join. Crocheters welcome, too. Individual projects, group projects, and friendships are knit together each week.

A grant from the Friends of the Library will soon be put to use to purchase sewing machines for a sewing studio in the branch.

Craft Salon, a free monthly craft program for individuals over 18, meets the first Saturday of the month from October to May. The DIY session that will kick off the season is on Saturday, October 4 at 11 am. Transform a used book into a beautiful decorative birdhouse. Registration is necessary for these sessions. Past programs have included presentations by a world-famous quilt artist, fabric designers, artists, weavers, craft book authors and more. Activities have ranged from making quilt blocks, knitting beaded jewelry, tin lantern making and various paper crafts.
