Darien's Geary Gallery Shows Stephen Knight's Art July 1-31

Darien, CT -- The Geary Gallery of Darien proudly presents “New England Coastlines” featuring the plein air coastal and maritime artwork of New England painter Stephen Knight. His exhibit runs July 1 – 31 at the Geary Gallery, 576 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT.

Knight was born and educated in London, England and has lived in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, France and now the U.S., where he has been a citizen since May 2004. A resident of Centerville, Cape Cod, Knight paints scenes of coastal and maritime New England year-round, and has studied with master artists Joseph McGurl, Donald Demers and T. Allen Lawson. After living and painting in five different countries, Knight is now inspired by the scenery of coastal and maritime New England, and particularly Cape Cod.

Knight prefers to paint outdoors (en plein air). “I need to be at one with my scene to capture on canvas the immediacy of time and place,” he explains. “My paintings are constantly evolving expressions of how I feel about my surroundings and I am fascinated by the effects of light and its role in revealing mood and atmosphere—the solitude of lake, marsh and estuary; the sweep of sea and sky.”

A past director of the Cape Cod Art Association, Stephen is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America Association and member of the American Society of Marine Artists. His paintings have been featured in many shows including the Cape Cod Art Association’s National and All New England Shows, as well as The Guild of Boston Artists New England Representational Shows.

Knight’s painting of Quivett Marsh was awarded “Best in Show” in the Chatham Creative Arts Center All Cape Cod Exhibition in which he was also juried in 2014. His painting “Herring River Marshes” was included in the 2011 Oil Painters of America National 20th Annual Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils. The goal of this prestigious national event is to “assemble the finest display of representational oil paintings … selecting paintings that show the highest quality in draftsmanship, color and composition…” Out of more than 2,000 entries, 159 paintings were accepted, with Stephen being the only artist selected from Massachusetts.

In 2012 and 2014, Knight’s work was juried into the Guild of Boston Artists Regional Painting Competition and from 2010 through 2014, his paintings were accepted into the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport’s Annual International Marine Art Exhibitions, where he is also a participant in its Maritime Miniatures by Maritime Masters shows.
