AFC Urgent Care Hosts Food Drive to Support Bpt Rescue Mission

Bridgeport, CT – American Family Care (AFC) Urgent Care is celebrating the grand opening of its second Bridgeport clinic with a holiday food drive to benefit the Bridgeport Rescue Mission (https://bridgeportrescuemission.org/).

AFC will collect canned goods such as vegetables, beans and soups plus boxed items including corn bread and stuffing through Friday, December 16th at its current locations at 161 Boston Avenue in Bridgeport and 1918 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield.

Bridgeport Rescue Mission (BRM) serves hungry, homeless or addicted men, women and children throughout coastal Fairfield County, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The Mission provides food, clothing, shelter, training and guidance to these individuals with a goal of “fighting poverty from the inside out”.  The organization is not funded by the government but receives support through grants, family foundations, corporate and individual donations.

Studies* show that in Bridgeport 37.6 percent of children, 16.2 percent of families and 18.4 percent of individuals live below the poverty line.  Bridgeport Rescue Mission prepares and distributes about 12,000 meals to the community each month at their 1069 Connecticut Avenue main campus and through mobile kitchens which serve neighborhoods in both Bridgeport and South Norwalk.  They also give out approximately 15,000 pantry bag meals monthly to those who need groceries for themselves and their families.

“BRM could not begin to serve our less fortunate neighbors without the help of generous partners like AFC Urgent Care! It is wonderful to have businesses that care enough about the needs of our community to engage with organizations like BRM.  We welcome the expansion of AFC in Bridgeport,” says Pastor Terry Wilcox, Executive Director.

AFC Urgent Care, the leader in walk-in urgent care with over 160 locations nationwide, provides fast, convenient and affordable care for many illnesses and injuries as well as routine health needs.  Services include on-site X-rays and lab tests, pre-employment physicals, drug screening, sports and school physicals, vaccinations and travel medicine. Patients receive prompt, compassionate treatment from board-certified physicians and experienced staff, eliminating the long waits and high copays of hospital emergency care.  AFC accepts most insurance plans and self-payment.

The new AFC Urgent Care clinic is located at 4200 Main Street in Bridgeport.  With eight patient exam rooms, it is the largest AFC facility in Connecticut to date.   The center will be open from 8 am to 10 pm weekdays and 8 am to 8 pm on weekends later this month when construction is completed.

The Main St. urgent care is the second AFC center in Bridgeport and the third in Fairfield County owned by Dr. Steven Heffer, M.D., who is also the medical director.  Since opening in March 2014, the first AFC on Boston Avenue has served 52,800 patients and has become a trusted health resource for the community.  According to AFC headquarters' Visit Count Report, AFC Bridgeport has consistently been among the top 10 clinics nationwide by patient visit count.  The center received the 2014 “Business in Bloom Award” by the Bridgeport Regional Business Council for its significant contributions to the city’s neighborhoods and surrounding towns.

Dr. Heffer is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with over 20 years of experience in emergency medical care.  Last year he was honored with the “Doctors of Distinction” Community Service Award from the Fairfield County Business Journal  for his passionate commitment to providing exceptional medical care, improved access to care and service to his community.

“Despite huge success and positive feedback we received from patients at our first location in Bridgeport, we knew there were still underserved areas within the city,” says Dr. Heffer. “We are thrilled to extend our medical services to other parts of Bridgeport so that more members of the community can easily access high quality care.”
