Westport, CT - Join the Westport Arts Center for a special concert by Rabbi Greg Wall, also known as “The Jazz Rabbi,” on Sunday, March 5 at 3pm.
Saxophonist Greg Wall is a celebrated musician and recording artist whose innovative downtown blend of jazz, world music and Jewish sounds has filled the halls of top venues from Carnegie Hall to stages throughout North America, Europe and Israel.
The March 5 “Of Jews and Jazz” concert will be a tribute to Wall’s jazz heroes and will include original music combining elements of Jazz, Jewish, and African American roots music as well as classics from the original golden era of Jewish New York.
According to Wall, Jewish musicians have been attracted to jazz since its inception, and helped create a wider audience for the music and its African American progenitors. Wall and his longtime associate David Morgan grew up listening to and playing all kinds of jazz. Their early New York City experiences were those of late night jam sessions, downtown jazz joints and apprenticeships with jazz masters.
Together with bassist Rich Zurkowski and drummer Matt Moadel, they form the working jazz collective known as "Portal.”
Brian Torff, the Westport Arts Center’s Curator for Jazz, explained, "Greg is the rare musician who makes a strong connection between both a musical and spiritual form of expression. This will be a dynamic performance that will utilize jazz in a realm that is rarely heard."
Concert attendees will also have the opportunity to view the As We Are! exhibition by Yale Senior Design Critic Pamela Hovland, currently on view at the Arts Center. The exhibition examines the theme of identity, stereotype and the power of words.
