ALT Offers Rain Garden Series

Westport, CT -- Aspetuck Land Trust is partnering with the Mill River Wetland Committee to encourage property owners to do things in their own yards that benefits our local environment. Your individual actions can make a tremendous difference to our local environment! Don't wait for the state or the federal government to do (or not do) something. Take it upon yourself to make a difference. This could be planting native plants that provide a food source for local wildlife like butterflies and birds, removing invasive plants, implementing sustainable lawn care practices to avoid using harmful herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides, or planting a RAIN GARDEN!

A rain garden is simply a shallow depression that is planted with deep-rooted native plants and grasses that redirects water from a runoff source like a downspout or driveway from running into the sewer system and ultimately Long Island Sound.  By installing a rain garden on your property or even using the principles of a rain garden in your landscaping, you can greatly increase your contribution to preserving clean rainwater, creating habitat and preventing local flooding and water pollution.

The Mill River Wetland Committee is holding 3 upcoming workshops at the Fairfield Main Library to show you how you can build a rain garden in your own yard.
