Easter Egg Roll at Pequot Library, April 15

Southport, CT – Pequot Library welcomes visitors to its 11th Annual Easter Egg Roll on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in the Auditorium and on Pequot’s Great Lawn.

This cherished community event takes its inspiration from the long-standing White House tradition. The history of the White House Egg Roll began in the 1870s, on Capitol Hill which had become a popular spot for children to roll eggs, and themselves, down the hill on Easter Monday. As the Washington, DC event grew more popular, the toll on the grounds was noticeable. In 1876, Congress passed a law forbidding the Capitol grounds to be used as a children's playground. In 1878, President Rutherford B. Hayes issued an order that if any children should come to the White House to roll their Easter eggs, they would be allowed to do so. The tradition has been carried on since at the White House, and has grown into the major event the public experiences today.

Pequot Library’s Annual Easter Egg Roll started 11 years ago. Pequot Library's Children's Librarian, Susan Ei explains, "There are so many candy-hunting activities in town, we wanted to offer a totally different alternative. Plus kids can dye their eggs here without the mess at home!"

Bring a long-handled wooden spoon and your own hard-boiled eggs for decorating at this "dye-in" event. Dance the Bunny Hop and meet the Easter Bunny himself. Visit with Pequot Library’s real, live rabbit, Blossom! Children can enjoy crafts and carnival games, too. Choose your favorite egg to enter in the age-category race. Rain or shine. This free program is for ages 2-12.

At last year's Easter Egg Roll, one mother of two young kids exclaimed, "We love the opportunity to carry on our family tradition of dyeing eggs for Easter, but nothing beats the excitement of watching line after line of eager kids rolling and racing their eggs across Pequot's Great Lawn. It's good, classic fun, and the grown-ups even get a chance to roll some eggs, too!"
