Southport, CT – Engage your children this summer in creative and cultural weeklong programs at Pequot Library. Children can become modern and contemporary artists, or discover how literature inspires community and worldwide service. Modern Masters, for ages 6-8, runs from Monday, June 19 - Friday, June 23, 2017. It is led by celebrated and experienced NYC teaching artist Rute Ventura from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s "Doing Art Together," a nonprofit arts education organization. Morning or afternoon sessions are offered. During each session, children observe and explore the works and techniques of famous artists, and then create their own masterpieces using a variety of materials. The morning session, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., features Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Josef Albers, René Magritte, Stuart Davis, and Gustav Klimt. The afternoon session, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., features Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jacob Lawrence, Salvador Dalí, Paul Cézanne, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Ventura returns the following week, Monday, June 26 - Friday, June 30, 2017, to teach Contemporary Masters for ages 6-8. Morning or afternoon sessions are offered. During the morning session, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., young artists explore works by Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, László Moholy-Nagy, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. In the afternoon session, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., participants explore works by Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kiki Smith, John Feodorov, Eva Hesse, and Nick Cave. Each day children create their own fine art using the techniques learned that day.
Older children can become fine artists under the instruction of Arturo Garcia, a NYC teaching artist and preeminent Mexican classical realist painter, as they enjoy Modern & Contemporary Masters I for ages 9-15 from Monday, June 19 - Friday, June 23, 2017. The morning session runs from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and the workshop will study landscape drawing, painting, sculpture, and works by Hudson River School artists, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh. The afternoon session is from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and will cover still life drawing, abstract painting creating cells, mixed media, and artist Piet Mondrian. Participants can also register for a full day from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Children attending full day workshops should bring a bagged lunch.
Garcia also will teach Modern & Contemporary Masters II, an art workshop for ages 9-15, from Monday, June 26 - Friday, June 30, 2017. The morning session is from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Young artists will study Hudson River School landscapes, abstract painting creating cells, multimedia collage, still life drawing, and watercolor painting. During the afternoon session, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., participants will study printmaking, figure sculpture, still life painting, and the artists Shepard Fairey, Wassily Kandinsky, and Ignazio Jacometti. Participants can also register for a full day from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Bring a bagged lunch.)
A customized Summer Service Workshop: Literature Inspiring Service for ages 7-12, takes place from Monday, July 17 - Friday, July 21, 2017, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This weeklong, half-day program teaches children the value of service to others through stories, games, and projects. Help Pequot Library "Build a Better World." Children will discover that they have the power to make a difference in their local and global communities through small acts of kindness. Each day kids will learn about a new country and the children who live there. Service projects include painting and packaging blanket kits for hospitals, boxing books for shipping to schools, providing notes of love, creating a shoebox of school supplies, and making toys like jump ropes, pick-up sticks, cat's cradles, and ribbon dancers for distribution. The program includes a daily snack time and Around the World Frisbee break! The workshop is led by the Wonderland BookSavers, a 501(c)(3) group that has donated over 140,000 books to 500,000 kids in 14 countries across three continents. This organization is primarily run by kids under the age of 18 and was originally started at Pequot Library!
