To supplement a brief posting on Fairfield HamletHub's Facebook site, the Fairfield Fire Dept. provided the following details about an auto accident at Cumberland Farms, near I-95's Exit 24, in Fairfield Monday, March 24, that resulted in several injuries.
According to a Fire Dept. spokesman, at 8:47pm, Monday, March 24, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a report of a car into a building with people trapped, with additional reports that the car was on fire. The Fairfield Fire Department responded with Companies 2 and 3, with Company 1 added based on the additional reports.
Upon arrival, Assistant Chief George Gomola found a female occupant trapped inside the driver's side of her vehicle. There was heavy damage to the front, side, and roof of the vehicle. The fire had been extinguished by a good Samaritan who used a fire extinguisher provided by the on-duty attendant. The "all stop" button on the gasoline dispensing units had also been engaged.
Fire personnel used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the driver's side door of the vehicle. The "a" and "b" posts of the vehicle had also been cut to facilitate roof removal if necessary. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was stabilized by AMR personnel, removed from the vehicle on a long board, and transported to the hospital.
Three additional victims were transported by AMR to the Hospital, no life threatening injuries were reported. AMR managed patient documentation and collected refusal of care forms as needed.
Engine 2 stood by until all of the vehicles were properly secured and removed from scene, and was the last Fire unit to clear at 11:02pm. Patient and victim information are unavailable at this time, as it was collected by PD.
