FAIRFIELD, CT, MARCH 30, 2014: On Sunday morning at approximately 6:29am, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a motor vehicle accident on I-95 northbound by Exit 22 near the rest area. Fairfield Fire Department Engine 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2, Ladder 2, and Car 3 responded. Company 1 and Car 3 arrived on scene at approximately 6:34am and reported a very serious multi-vehicle accident, with a car under a trailer truck, the car on fire, and one occupant trapped in the vehicle.
Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood assumed command of the incident. Engine 1 immediately controlled the fire. Extrication was initiated using multiple hydraulic rescue tools. Access was rapidly gained to the single occupant of the vehicle and it was determined that she had no pulse. The fire department initiated an operation to lift the trailer off of the car. Westport Fire Department and Fairfield Engine 4 were requested to the scene for assistance with the extrication.
American Medical Response arrived shortly after the fire department. State Police remained on the scene completing their investigation after the Fire Department left. The Fire Department remained on scene until approximately 8:30.
