Mill River Wetland Committee Celebrates 50 Years in Fairfield

Fairfield, CT - On Monday, October 17 at 9am, the Mill River Wetland Committee will be honored with a proclamation recognizing its 50-year presence in Fairfield.

Attendees will include Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau, guests/dignitaries and parents attending a river guide session. Guests will be invited to take part in an aspect of the River-Lab Program, utilizing the Grade 4 models to compare the impact of natural and developed spaces on the groundwater system.

Beginning in the late 1960s, MRWC promoted purchase of open space along the Mill River in Fairfield, Connecticut, and took a leading role in the defense and protection of endangered wetlands through increased awareness and education. Concern for our environmental future prompted the launching of River-Lab, a unique hands-on program of environmental science study that has grown to include all students in grades 3-6 in all public and parochial schools in Fairfield. All elements of the program have been adopted as part of the science curriculum and designed to complement the current science education standards.

The gathering will take place at Perry’s Mill Pond/River-Lab Open Space, Sturges Road.  Parking along the east side of Sturges Road or a short walk from the parking lot at Sturges Road and Mill Hill Terrace.
