Summer Safety Tips from Fairfield Fire Dept.

With Independence Day fast approaching and outdoor activities in full summer swing, the Fairfield Fire Department would like to provide some important safety tips regarding fireworks, outdoor grilling, and lightning. Most importantly, Fairfield residents are encouraged to attend this year's 375th Fireworks Show on the 4th of July after sundown following the Atwood Express Oldies Band which will be playing at Jennings Beach from 5:00 to 7:00pm.

According to the Connecticut State Police and General Statues, "All fireworks are illegal in the State of Connecticut with the exception of sparklers and fountains" unless presented at a state approved site by a Connecticut licensed pyrotechnician. The Office of the State Fire Marshal reminds residents that state law defines both sparklers and fountains as "non-explosive, non-aerial devices that contain less than 100 grams of pyrotechnic mixture", with the added caution that "if two or more fountains are attached to the same base, the total quantity of pyrotechnic composition of combined cannot exceed 200 grams."

Novelty items such as party poppers, snakes, smoke devices, and anything that emits a flame are not legal for private use in Connecticut, nor are sky or Kongming lanterns, according to the State Fire Marshal, which reports that "a number of house fires and grass fires have been attributed to the use of fireworks" and warns that "if a fire or explosion caused by fireworks causes injuries or damage, or poses the risk of either, the person responsible could be charged with a felony criminal offense." Last week's fatal fire in Southington is being linked to the illegal use of fireworks, according to state and local investigators.

Other hazards of the season may include grilling and inclement weather. Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors, well away from the home, deck railings, eaves and trees. Grills should be kept clean by removing grease or fat buildup, and in the case of propane, checked for leaks using a soapy water solution prior to use. Children and pets should be kept away from the grilling area, and in the case of charcoal, away from charcoal starter fluid and matches or starters. Grills should never be left unattended, and after grilling the coals should be left to cool completely before disposal in a metal container.

Finally, while thunderstorms happen throughout the year, lighting strikes and fires occur most often in the summer. If thunder is audible, lightning is within striking distance and shelter inside a home, large building, or hard-topped vehicle should be sought. Large trees and window or doors should be avoided, but if no shelter is available and lightning strike is imminent, the NFPA recommends squatting "low on the ground on the balls of your feet" to "make yourself the smallest target possible" with minimal contact to the ground. If a person is struck by lightning it is essential that the 911 system be activated and medical care brought to the scene immediately.

Any further questions regarding safety and fire hazards may be directed to Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner or the Office of the Fire Marshal at 203-254-4720.
