Fed Ex Tractor Trailer Rolls Over in Southport

FAIRFIELD, CT, JULY 23, 2014: At approximately 2:28 AM, Fairfield firefighters responded to a reported tractor-trailer rollover in front of 3355 Post Road, Dunkin' Donuts of Southport. The accident involved a FedEx tandem tractor-trailer and a small sport-utility vehicle.

Lieut. Scott Trembley was the first fire officer on scene and established command. The cab and front section of the tandem Fed Ex tractor trailer was laying on the driver's side, the rear tandem was standing upright. The sport utility vehicle involved in the accident was parked in the center of the roadway. All occupants were out of their vehicles. The driver of the tractor-trailer and the two female occupants of the sport-utility received minor injuries and declined treatment. The primary concern after the life safety needs were addressed was environmental impact. The accident occurred within ten feet of a storm drain and catch basin that led directly to Southport harbor. The overturned tractor-trailer contained 80 gallons of diesel fuel and several gallons of motor oil that threaten leak or rupture if not handled properly.

The CT DEEP was contacted and agent John Aceto responded. Through carefully coordinated efforts, Fairfield firefighters worked with CT D.E.E.P. Agents, Budds Wrecker Service and the cleanup contractor to flip the overturned tractor-trailer back onto its wheels and to minimize any environmental impact caused by the incident. The last fire unit left the scene shortly before 6 AM. No injuries reported by firefighters or recovery workers. Assistant Chief George Gomola was the incident commander.
