Fairfield's Bravest Contain Fire at Sunnyridge Apts.

FAIRFIELD, CT -- At 7:09 PM on Tuesday August 12th, the Fairfield Fire Department responded to a reported oven fire in Unit 89 of the Sunnyridge Apartments, 240 Sunnyridge Ave. The resident reported that she had turned on the oven to preheat it to cook dinner and left the kitchen. When she returned she noticed a fire in the oven.

After calling 911, the resident waited outside for firefighters. Lt. Scott Trembley arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the rear of the multi-unit apartment building. The crew of Engine 2 advanced a hose line into the building and extinguished the fire, which had extended from the oven to the cabinets above. Fairfield Firefighters searched the second floor of the unit and the apartments on either side for victims and for fire extension.

One neighbor was examined for possible smoke inhalation but declined treatment. A gas line supplying the stove was damaged and the leaking gas contributed to the fire extension. Firefighters shut off the gas supply at the meter and SCGC was called to the scene. DFM Hank Ference responded to the scene to conduct a fire investigation. Building Official Tom Connelly responded to the scene to inspect the electrical system.

The last fire unit left the scene shortly after 9 PM. Asst. Chief George Gomola was the fire incident commander. Engines 1,2,3,4,5, Ladders 1 and 2, Rescue 15, Cars 3 and 5 responded to this incident. Chief Felner was notified. Fairfield PD provided traffic control.
