Fairfield's Bravest Respond to Gas Leak

FAIRFIELD, CT, AUGUST 18, 2014: After a busy morning with multiple motor vehicle accidents, fire alarms, and emergency medical calls, the Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched at 12:49pm on Monday afternoon to a reported gas leak outside of a residence at 5 Garden Court.

Companies 2, 3, and 5 responded, and upon arrival several minutes later Engine 3 Lieutenant Lee Corbo took command and reported a natural gas line break on the street side of the meter in front of an occupied two-story wood framed home, requesting a response from Southern Connecticut Gas to assist in shutting off the leak. Fire personnel evacuated the residence, set up a protective hose stream in front of the house, established a water supply line from the hydrant, and began to meter the building, by which time Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood arrived and assumed command.

Fairfield personnel assisted Southern Connecticut Gas in accessing the street shutoff before turning the scene over to SCG representatives to complete repairs.

"This was a good example of why residents need to inspect their utilities on a regular basis," observed first arriving officer Corbo. "The lines leading into the house service showed signs of rust, indicating the possibility that they may have become compromised. It's also critical that people check their smoke, carbon monoxide and gas detectors if they have them on a regular basis and change the batteries when they change their clocks."

Fire Chief Richard Felner in Car 3 and Fire Department Safety Officer Christopher Tracy in Car 5 also responded to the scene, with Engine 3 the last Fairfield Fire unit to clear at 2:21pm.
