Fairfield's Bravest Get Quick Stop On Attic Fire

At 4:19pm on Thursday, Oct. 2nd, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from 52 Adelaide Street reporting an attic fire. Fire Department Car 3, Engines 1, 2, 3 & 5, and Ladders 1 & 2 were dispatched, with Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood first on the scene at 4:22 confirming a working fire with visible flames from the front and assuming command. Incident Commander Sherwood called for an additional engine and mutual aid for coverage, and Engine 3, Cars 1 & 3, Maintenance 1 and FM 1 & 3 from the Fire Marshal's Office responded along with PD, AMR, UI & SCG.

"The first in engine company led by Lt. Barry made an aggressive attack on the fire," said A/C Sherwood. "They got a quick knockdown on the attic fire, and interior crews stretched lines to the first and second floor, encounter heavy smoke and some additional fire which they extinguished. I'm extremely proud of the extraordinary teamwork the fire department demonstrated in containing the fire and keeping it from extending into the home immediately adjacent" to the fire building, "especially considering that the gap between them was less than a foot."

Sherwood placed a recall of alarm within twenty minutes of arrival, with units remaining on the scene as of 5:20, the time of this release. Chief Dick Felner was on the scene, and there were no injuries reported by occupants or first responders; Fire Marshal Bill Kessler and Inspector Hank Ference from the Fire Marshal's Office are working to determine the cause which remains under investigation.
