Kyran Dunn Named Deputy Chief of Fairfield's Bravest

FAIRFIELD, CT: Following an extensive search and interview process, on Thursday, March 9th, the Fairfield Fire Commission voted unanimously to appoint Kyran Dunn to the position of Deputy Chief of the Fairfield Fire Department. Dunn started in that role March 16th.

“We received resumes from numerous excellent candidates for this position and put the finalists through a rigorous assessment center,” observed Chief Fiscal Officer Bob Mayer. “Chief Dunn brings a wealth and breadth of knowledge and experience in both administration and operation to the position, and we expect him to make a seamless transition into the Fairfield Fire Department.”

Prior to being hired as second in command under Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner, Chief Dunn served for over fourteen years as Assistant Chief of the Yonkers Fire Department from May of 1999 until his retirement in July of 2013. “I’m looking forward to what Deputy Chief Dunn will bring to this Department,” said Felner. “His previous work with Yonkers is impressive, and I’m sure it will serve the residents and businesses of Fairfield well.”

After joining the Yonkers Fire Department in 1981 as a third-generation Yonkers Firefighter, Chief Dunn was assigned to Engine 305, Engine 306, Squad 1, and Ladder 74 before commanding Yonkers Fire Station 6 and Battalion 2. He served as Chief of Staff and Acting Chief of Operations for the Department, administered its Records Management System, and was Liaison for Information Technology for over a decade.

During his thirty-two year career with the Yonkers Fire Department, Chief Dunn instructed Probationary Firefighter Classes, Hazardous Materials Courses and Officer Training courses, and authored several of the Department's Standard Operating Guidelines; he has also been a New York State Emergency Medical Technician since 1988, and has initiated the process of obtaining EMT certification in Connecticut.

Chief Dunn has been a member of the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials’ Data Transfer Committee, and served from 1997 to 2004 as an Adjunct Faculty member in SUNY Empire State College's Fire Administration Program.  He received a Class 1 Award, a Class B award, and seven Unit Citations from the Yonkers Fire Department, and was recognized by the Exchange Club as Firefighter of the Year twice.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University, a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration from SUNY and a Juris Doctor from Pace University where he was awarded the Adolph Homburger Humanitarian Award. Chief Dunn is married with three children, and his son is the City of Yonkers’ first fourth-generation Firefighter.

“The Fire Commission has made an excellent choice in hiring Mr. Dunn who brings a high caliber of experience, expertise and dedication to this key position in our Town,” noted First Selectman Mike Tetreau. “I was very impressed with the hiring process and due diligence the Fire Commission used to find the best possible candidate to fill this critical position in Fairfield’s Fire Department.”
