Kitchen Fire at Southport Restaurant Causes Evacuation

SOUTHPORT, CT -- On Tuesday, May 19, at 9:32pm, the Fairfield Fire Department received a 911 report of a building fire at the S&S Dugout located at 3449 Post Road. First arriving police and fire units found a heavy smoke condition inside the building, which is a restaurant on the 1st floor and residential apartments on the second floor. Fire personnel were met by a resident employee who told them that after smelling smoke inside the building, he opened the restaurant and used an extinguisher to control the fire behind the counter. The building was quickly searched, evacuated and the remainder of the fire was extinguished by fire personnel.

No injuries were reported by any of the occupants. Fire and smoke damage was confined to the 1st floor of the building but the restaurant will remain closed until repairs can be made. The Building and Health departments were requested to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson commented, “Quick actions by the residents prevented this fire from growing too large before firefighters arrived to extinguish it and will hopefully allow the business to reopen very soon.”

Units from the Fairfield Fire Department and a truck from the Southport Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fairfield Fire Marshal’s office and appears to have originated inside a commercial dishwasher.
