Truck Crashes Into Occupied Building, No Injuries

FAIRFIELD, CT - On May 9, 2016 at 4:52 PM, the Fairfield fire and Police departments responded to a report of a vehicle that crashed into a building at 281 Pequot Ave., Southport. Engine 4 arrived on scene and found a commercial truck and trailer that had crashed into the side of the building with the engine compartment sticking inside the structure. The building is a mixed occupancy of office, gallery and apartments and was occupied at the time of the accident. The occupant inside the building stated that she heard a loud crash and felt the building shake after the accident. The driver was able to get out of the truck by himself and remained on scene for responders to arrive.

Fire units arrived on scene and shut off the truck which was still running. A check of the building was performed as police initiated their investigation. The driver had no complaints and refused medical assistance. Fire crews secured the interior of the building and called for the town building official to ensure it was safe to occupy. Electrical power was shut off to the damaged portion of the building. Fire crews attempted to salvage valuables that were in the area and damaged due to debris. Two heavy wreckers were called to the scene to remove both the trailer and truck from the building while fire crews remained on scene for environmental concerns. After the structure was deemed safe by the building official, the scene was turned over to the building owner for repairs and security after removal of vehicles.

The accident remains under investigation by the Fairfield Police Department. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 6:31 PM.
