Fairfield Firefighters Battle Afternoon Home Blaze

FAIRFIELD, CT - On Friday, September 16, 2016 at approximately 3:39 PM, the Fairfield 911 center received a report of a house on fire in the area of 163 Longfellow Ave by a neighbor. Additional 911 calls were received reporting a house and deck on fire at the same location.

The first fire unit arrived on scene at 3:43 pm to find heavy smoke and fire visible. Civilians on scene made attempts to warn any occupants of the house to evacuate but none exited the house. Engine 2 advanced a hose line into the structure to control the fire and search for any possible victims and pets. Additional companies arrived on scene and advanced additional hose lines to the interior and exterior of the building to assist in controlling the fire. Rescue and Ladder companies completed additional searches of the structure, assisted with locating hidden wall fires and performed overhaul to make the building safe.

Fire personnel did not find any occupants in the building but did remove two pet birds form the house. One of the birds succumbed to smoke inhalation from the fire while the second was revived on scene once removed from the house. During the firefighting operations, the occupants of the home returned to the scene. With the majority of the interior fires quickly controlled, fire personnel remained on scene for approximately one hour performing overhaul on the exterior of the building removing vinyl siding and smoldering Styrofoam insulation. The house received significant fire and smoke damage throughout. While the building is structurally safe, the family was not able to stay in the house overnight.

Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson, the on scene incident commander stated, ”While no one was home to be alerted, the Fairfield Fire Department reminds all of our residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and to replace detectors that are 10 or more years old.”

Commenting on the emergency vehicle response to the fire, Assistant Chief Bisson stated, “We also want to remind our residents to please pay attention to the presence of emergency vehicles on the road responding to 911 calls and to immediately move over to the right and stop until they pass in accordance with the Connecticut General Statutes.” C.G.S. 14-283 Rights of Emergency Vehicles states, “… the operator of every other vehicle in the immediate vicinity shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain in such position until the emergency vehicle has passed…”

The Fairfield Fire Marshall’s office and Fairfield Police are investigating the cause of the fire and ask anyone with information to please call the Fairfield Fire Marshall’s Office at 203-254-4720 or the Fairfield Police at 203-254-4800.
