Fairfield Health Dept. Offers Free National Diabetes Prevention Program

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – Are you pre-diabetic and/or at risk for type 2 diabetes? If so, you may be eligible for a FREE Diabetes Prevention Program offered by the Fairfield Health Department. This program is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program in which the Fairfield Health Department is a recognized site to deliver their evidence-based program.

To be eligible for the program, individuals need to be over the age of 18 years and been diagnosed with prediabetes and/or at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This program is a yearlong and meets weekly for the first 16 weeks and monthly after that. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 6:30-8pm at Jennings Elementary School. Registration is required. This program begins on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 and space is limited, so call now to see if you are eligible and reserve your spot.

According to the CDC, 86 million Americans have prediabetes and 9 out of 10 of them don’t even know that have it. Furthermore, without lifestyle medications and intervention, 15% to 30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. This National program can help delay or reduce one’s risk for developing type 2 diabetes as well as lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke, improve overall health, and help individuals feel more energized.
