Fairfield, CT -- On Tuesday, February 21, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary 77 Fairfield, located on South Benson Marina adjacent to Jennings Beach, was the host to Harbor Watch, a not-for-profit program of Earthplace Nature Discovery Center of Westport, CT. The auxiliary membership learned of the vital role in the effort to protect and improve the quality of Long Island Sound and the Connecticut waters that feed it. Harbor Watch scientists collect and provide data, knowledge and field expertise needed to safeguard Connecticut waterways, educate our communities about watershed issues, and train volunteers and student interns through hands-on research. Water activities include freshwater monitoring, storm sewer monitoring, fish surveys in harbors, water temperature measurement and dissolved oxygen studies in harbors.
Guest speaker Nikki Cantatore, Harbor Watch Associate Director of Research, explained the direct correlation of both pollution and elevated water temperatures to fish populations. Earthplace is open seven days a week for all to explore a fascinating world at our shores.
