Howard's new book takes us on a revealing historical and photographic tour of the homes of influential Civil War figures, including Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe and others. This large-format hardcover shows readers the homes of Civil War era leaders, generals, activists, and caregivers. In photographs and well-researched text, Houses of Civil War America takes us to a different era and into the lives of individuals and families who the war transformed. With insightful narrative and gorgeous photography, Houses Of Civil War America demonstrates--through these landmark homes--the nation we were and the nation we became.

The Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Hartford is one of six homes featured in the final section of the book focusing on Reconstruction. The celebrated author of Uncle Tom's Cabin lived the final 23 years of her life in the 1871 Victorian Gothic Revival Home, now a National Historic Landmark. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center uses the home to share the story of Stowe's life and work to inspire commitment to social justice and positive change.
