Carmelina Myers of Country Childrens Center awarded scholarship from Child Care Council of Westchester

The Child Care Council of Westchester has announced that Carmelina Myers - Director of Educational Programs at The Country Childrens Center in Katonah - is the 2017 recipient of the Cathryn A. Riley Leadership Fund Scholarship and was accepted into the Leadership Westchester (LW) Class of 2018 which kicked off October. LW is a program of Volunteer New York!, featuring a rigorous nine-month curriculum designed to sharpen leadership skills and give participants an in-depth understanding of how non-profits work.

“I am honored to be the recipient of this scholarship and accepted into the Leadership Westchester program,” said Carmelina. “I look forward to using this amazing opportunity to learn and connect with other emerging leaders throughout Westchester County and hopefully inspire others to learn more about the critical role of early education in young children.”

The Cathryn Riley Leadership Fund Scholarship is named for a program coordinator at the Child Care Council who died in a tragic car accident at the age of 45. To honor Cate’s contributions to the field of child care as a teacher, mentor and leader, the Council established the Fund to promote leadership and innovation in the field of early childhood and school age care. The Fund’s executive committee decided to use it to support a scholarship to Leadership Westchester for the second year in a row, and selected Carmelina as the recipient. Child Care Council Executive Director Kathy Halas, former Child Care Council Executive Director Lottie Harris, Westchester Community College Early Childhood Education Professor Mary Lou Sgro, and Children’s Center at Purchase College Director Dr. Pat Amanna serve on the committee.

“We are grateful to Leadership Westchester for the opportunity to bring early childhood leaders into a community of men and women making a significant impact in our region,” said Kathy Halas. “Carmelina will be an excellent ambassador for the early education community and we look forward to sharing in her experience.”
