Weekend Guide- August 18-20

 

This is the weekend many people head out of town since camp is now done and the countdown to when school starts begins.  Whether you’re staying in Rye Brook or heading out of town, there’s still plenty to do right here.  Wishing you all wonderful weekends and vacations! BTW, one last reminder, the eclipse is on Monday, remember not to look at it directly without approved eclipse glasses.  Blindness can occur if you or your children look directly at it.

Rye Library

Today, Friday, from 4-5pm check out the Summer S.T.E.A.M. Workshop with ArchForKids- Fun With Facades- Explore The distinctive structures of your community. Re-create their fonts (facades).  This fun workshop is for kids in Grades 3-5 only. As space is limited, pre-registration is required.  Registration began on Aug 11.

Tomorrow, Saturday, from 11am-11:45 stop by the Village Green (weather permitting) for Family Storytime Yoga - Moving Through the World in Stories.  “Master Storytime Yoga teacher Elisha Simpson, narrates international folktales and interprets them through yoga to give children a way to connect and discover their inner world of creativity, body and imagination.”

And finally, Saturday 2-3pm, just in time for Monday’s eclipse, Solar Eclipse Workshop With Johnda Ferrari.  “This workshop is for kids age 9 & up only!

In this workshop science teacher, Johnda Ferrari will shed some light on some of the mysteries surrounding a solar eclipse.  She will also help us understand what the  excitement is surrounding the upcoming Solar Eclipse on August 21.  Join us in this fun workshop as we learn all about Solar Eclipses and how to stay safe while watching them. Participants will enjoy making their own solar camera or viewer to take home. Harrison Library

Today from 3-3:30 check out Chloe’s Sign and Play!  “Give your child the gift of language!  Sign & Play is a fun class where families can learn to communicate with their pre-verbal children using real signs from American Sign Language. 

Based on the award-winning Baby Signing Time series, this class will give parents a window into the hearts and minds of their little ones. Through fun songs, stories and games, parents and children will learn many useful signs for everyday communication. Come sign with us!”

 

Bruce Museum

The Bruce Museum is a hidden gem located just up the road from us in nearby Greenwich, CT.  After you’ve checked out the museum, head across the street to a super fun playground the kids are sure to love! 

On Friday from 2:30-2:45pm, check out the Marine Tank Animal Feeding.

Family Gallery Tour will take place on Sunday, August 20th from 11:30am - 12:15pm.  “Designed for families with children ages 6-10. These tours, led by a Museum educator, provide an interactive, discussion-based exploration of the Museum's current exhibitions. Free with admission; no registration required.”

On Sunday from 1-3pm, stop by Art Adventures: Landscape Painting.  This “drop-in program designed for children aged 4 and up and their families.  In this program, participants will have the opportunity to craft fun and creative works of art inspired by the museum’s collections and exhibitions. This program is free with general admission and no advanced registration is required.  We will be painting landscapes inspired by the scenes in the Museum's exhibition Canvas and Cast: Highlights from the Bruce Museum’s Art Collection.”

And finally, on Sunday from 1:30-4:30 check out Science on the Silver Screen-Alien.  “Enjoy an afternoon at the movies with the experts! Movie screening followed by Q&A sessions with a scientist to explain what was right, what was wrong, and what was just confusing. Held in the Bantle Lecture Gallery. Free with Museum admission, but registration is required.”

 

Entergy Screening Under the Stars

Today, Friday, August 18th, head to Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla at 6pm for an Outdoor Movie screening of “Sing” (PG, 2016.)  “Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. The movie begins at sundown. Admission and parking are free.

Moviegoers should bring blankets, folding chairs and a picnic. Refreshments will also be available for sale. In the event of rain, the movie will be canceled. 

“Sing” is an animated feature that follows the antics of a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition, which becomes grander than he anticipates.” 

 

Westchester Children’s Museum

Good news! The Westchester Children’s Museum is open for business and for you and the kids to enjoy!  This “sunlit, colorful, vibrant learning space is filled with interactive exhibits that explore science, art, technology, design and the environment, with places to build, play, and create.”  The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays 10-4.  Current exhibits include:

On Sunday, from 11-1145, stop by the museum for Science Sundays: Make a Zoetrope.  “Are you up for the challenge? Bring your creativity and critical thinking skills to the Museum. This active and hands-on workshop will inspire you to tinker and build wherever you are.  Designed for children ages 7 and up.”

 

Playland

Playland is open for the season! Park hours this Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 12-11pm and Sunday from 12-10.  Fireworks will take place every Friday night until  September 1 at 9:15 p.m. 

 

Barnes & Noble

On Saturday at 11am kids and their grownups can stop by for a Nothing Rhymes with Orange Storytime.  “We all know nothing rhymes with orange, but how does that make Orange feel? Left out, of course! But when Apple notices how Orange is feeling, the entire English language begins to become a bit more inclusive. Activities to follow.”

Also taking place on Saturday at 2pm, Maisy Visits Storytime Costume Character.  “Join us for Storytime at 2pm and meet the lovable character Maisy from Lucy Cousins' classic Maisy series.”

Did you know?  Pre-K through Grade 12 educators can stop by Barnes & Noble every Saturday and Sunday in August to do back-to-school shopping and “enjoy 25% off most books, toys, games, movies, music, and 10% off Café consumables and select NOOK devices.”

Our closest store is in City Center in White Plains but other nearby locations include Eastchester’s new store complete with a fabulous café!

 

Stamford Museum and Nature Center

Maize Mysteries of an Ancient Grain- “This summer you can explore the science and history of maize and see why it continues to surprise us today. Learn about fascinating advances in the science of plant genetics, the process of evolution, and how "useful mutations" can address world health and hunger issues.”  This will take place from June 24-Sept 24.

On Saturday WILD! Feeding Saturdays will take place from 11-11:30am.  “Ever wonder how we feed our exhibit animals in Heckscher WILD!? Help make salads for our tortoises, lizards, and other fruit- and veggie-loving friends. Spaces for this program are limited and are first-come, first-served. Ages 5 and up.”

Honeybee Open Hive is happening Sunday from 11-2!  “On National Honeybee Day, we champion our smallest, most industrious farm residents. Discover the buzz during hive demos (weather permitting) and a honey bee scavenger hunt at our Sunday Farm Market. You'll plant native wildflower seeds to take home and meet some other 6- legged creatures. We'll also have a tasting of a variety of honeys, including SM&NC honey, a honey that tastes like marshmallows, and the "champagne" of honeys.”

Also on Sunday, The SM&NC Sunday Farm Market is back!  “Many favorites are returning and we've added some new vendors to offer a wider variety of items. Also available are our very own farm-fresh eggs made by our chickens on Heckscher Farm, maple syrup made in our own maple sugar "shack," and wool from our sheep.

There will be weekly farm-related family activities during our "Market Madness" programs led by one of our environmental educators.”

 
 

Summer Stars Planetarium Shows will take place on Sundays from July 9 - August 20, 2 - 3 pm.  “Join us to search the summer night sky ... during the day! Discover some of the common constellations of the summer and the stories behind them. Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served. Doors will open 15 minutes before scheduled program. Recommended for ages 5 and up. No strollers, please. Shows start promptly; no late admission. Parents must accompany children.”

And finally, a Solar Eclipse Celebration will be happening on Monday, August 21, from 1:30-3:30 pm.  “Join us for a celebration of the solar eclipse! While Connecticut won't see a total eclipse, we can safely view the partial eclipse and will stream the total eclipse live in the Stamford Museum galleries. We'll have some fun solar-themed crafts, a solar science lab, planetarium shows, and a chance to meet some of our "sun baskers," animals who rely on the sun for their thermoregulation. Meets in the Museum Building (Bendel Mansion).”

 

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones museum is another amazing place for the kids.  Located about 20 minutes north of Rye Brook, in Norwalk, CT, it’s perfect for the whole family! Check them out here, then head on over for a fun filled day of learning and hands-on activities the kids will adore!  

This week, August 14-20, is Mega Summer: Astronomy.  The activities and programs vary by day but can be found online.

Maritime Aquarium

There is always SO much going on at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT.

TGIF Cruises take place every Friday from 6:30 - 8 pm at a cost of $29.95 ($19.95 for Aquarium Members).  “Start your weekend off with a fun relaxing boat ride out to the Norwalk Islands, and get back in time to enjoy a late dinner or an evening out with friends just steps away in the restaurants and nightspots of SoNo. Aquarium educators will be onboard to point out sights and wildlife, but there's no structured program.”

Sunset Cruises take place every Saturday at 7 pm at a cost of $29.95 ($19.95 for Aquarium Members).  “Enjoy a fun relaxing boat tour out to the Norwalk Islands timed to include the setting sun and - providing cooperation beyond our control - a dazzling western sky reflecting on the water. Aquarium educators will point out sights and wildlife.  Food and drinks are not available for purchase on the boat. You may bring food and beverages in a small bag or soft-sided cooler. Glass bottles are prohibited.  Reminder that all passengers must be over 42 inches tall.”

A Marine Life Encounter Cruise will take place on August Aug. 16-18 and 20-21 from 1 - 3:30 p.m. at a cost of $29.95 ($24.95 for Aquarium Members).  “Study marine biodiversity from the water's surface down to the bottom for a first-hand understanding of Long Island Sound's interdependent marine life. We utilize such sampling techniques as a plankton tow, trawl net and biodredge that generally bring up a variety of fish, crabs, mollusks and more right before your eyes!”

Also on Saturday from 10-3pm, why not head out on a Central Long Island Sound Lighthouse Cruise.  Tickets:  $70 ($60 for Aquarium Members).  “Cruise out with us for rare close-up looks at five historic lighthouses in central Long Island Sound. During the five-hour cruise, Aquarium educators will share histories and anecdotes about the lighthouses, and also point out the Sound's waterfowl. Bring your camera!”

Have you checked out "Journey With Jellies" A bigger & even better jellyfish exhibit yet?  “Get close to some of the most strangely beautiful – but painfully dangerous – animals in the sea as The Maritime Aquarium presents a newly expanded exhibit of jellyfish, including species we've never displayed before!

See Pacific sea nettles in an enormous new display, bizarre flower-hat jellies, "upside-down" jellies in a cool half-dome, and more!”  

Check out the Coral Reef Exhibit!  “A rainbow of colors dart and dash in our new 3,000-gallon Coral Reef exhibit, open now just past the Sea Turtles exhibit.

Meet more than 40 species of reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific, including brilliantly colored varieties of tangs, triggerfish, wrasses and more.

Displays explain why reef systems are so important to the ocean, yet why they’re also so fragile.

Plus, learn how global ocean currents can connect water in reefs on the other side of the planet to our local Long Island Sound – and thus, how our stewardship of the Sound also means good stewardship of all Earth's marine ecosystems.”

"Flamingos” special exhibit opened May 27 and runs until Sept. 4 (Labor Day).

In addition, the International Children's Art exhibit is also open through Sept. 4 (Labor Day).

The aquarium is definitely worth a trip up the Merritt or 95!

Hudson River Museum

The Hudson River Museum, in Yonkers, boasts an amazing Planetarium, six galleries, and a mansion!

Fun happenings in the amphitheater this weekend at 8pm…

-On Friday check out Joey Berkley’s Bandits- Joey Berkley, Director of the Westchester Center for Jazz and Contemporary Music, along with his “Bandits” perform their unique funky sound rooted in the tradition of Miles, Monk and Coltrane.

-And on Saturday, Love’s Labor Lost-Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival presents this hilarious Shakespearean comedy that forces eligible gentlemen to keep love, food, and sleep at arm’s length.

In addition museum entrance is free Fridays and Saturday evenings from 5-8pm from July 7-Sept 2.

Saturdays & Sundays 12 - 5 pm there’s “a safe space for children to explore, play, and create with their families.  The room hosts a large-scale dollhouse, blocks, puppet theater, and books.  A Junior Docent is present to answer questions and suggest activities.”

And Saturday and Sundays from 1-4, kids can do fun art projects.  This

kids will have fun creating and building a “3D-popping flower” with art materials.

Science Project making will take place on Saturdays from 1 - 4 pm this June - September
with “Solar Eclipses & More.    Learn how to safely watch the eclipse in August! Make a model of the sun, and then look at it through our solar telescope.”

NEW! A Contemplative Summer.  “A wellness series of simple yoga and meditation practice in the galleries, led by Neem Dewji and Irving Yee, from Yoga for Bliss, Riverdale. All levels welcome.  Chair Yoga: Gentle Stretches & Breath Work

Timothy Tilghman: The Flowers Behind the Paintings event will take place on Sun, Aug 20th at 2pm.  “Head Gardener at Untermyer Gardens, Timothy Tilghman gives a horticulturalist’s perspective on the flowers we see in paintings.”

And finally, come witness the Great American Eclipse @ the HRM on Mon, August 21, from 12:30 – 3pm.  “FREE and open to all.  On August 21, the shadow of a full solar eclipse will move across the United States. The path of this shadow, also known as the "path of totality," is 70 miles wide and will pass over 14 states, from Oregon to South Carolina. The rest of the country, including New York, will experience a partial solar eclipse. 

Come experience this once-in-a-lifetime celestial phenomenon at the Hudson River Museum!

  •   Make pinhole projections, model the earth-moon system in our interactive workshops
  •   View the partial solar eclipse from the courtyard through our specialized solar telescope and handheld filters, and bring your own special eclipse glasses.

Starting at 1pm, watch a live stream of the full eclipse from Oregon, where our Planetarium Manager Marc Taylor will be stationed, alongside projections of two real-time simulations in our Planetarium.”

Pirate Quest at Philipsburg

Don’t miss the fun Pirate Quest Saturday and Sunday at Philipsburg Manor.  Can’t make it this weekend?  Not to worry, it will also be taking place on August 26-27.  “Pint-sized pirates can set their sails to Philipsburg Manor! Our new mobile game sets the scene for swashbuckling fun as children hunt through the site's grounds to load precious cargo onto their digital pirate ships. Kids looking for adventure can pick up a tattoo and keep watch for pirates and sword fights. But only those who finish the game will capture the treasure!

Pirate attire is encouraged!

Perfect for ages 5-8

Children must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. 

9:30 to 10:30am - Entry every 15 minutes.”

 

Greenburgh Nature Center

Just off Central Avenue, the GNC is an amazing place for the whole family and often offers special events on the weekends. 

Meet the Animals on Sunday, August 20th, from 1-2pm.  “$5 for members and $8 for non-members.  An informative program that allows you to get up-close and hands-on with some of the Nature Center’s live animals! What wild fun will you have today?”

 

Michael’s

Most Saturdays from 10-12 Michael’s offers a fun Kids Club® craft that kids can participate in while their parents shop.  This Saturday’s project is making Kids Club® Pom Pom and Gem Art.  Perfect for Back to School.  The cost is $2 per project and supplies are included.  Sign up in store or online, or just drop in.  Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

MAKEbreak is taking place also on Saturday from 1-3pm.  You buy a canvas, and the rest of the supplies for your art project are free.  “Create art inspired by your favorite season. Adults can enter their artwork in our 3rd Annual Art Challenge! Buy a canvas, and the rest of the supplies for your art project are free.”

 

Lakeshore

Lakeshore also hosts a free craft workshop for kids most Saturdays from 11-3pm.  This Saturday’s craft also sounds super fun, creating a Fold & Hold Pencil Cup!  Appropriate for kids ages 3 & up. No reservation necessary. Free.”

 

Clay Arts Center

Every Saturday from 2 - 4pm adults and children can “have fun in this one-time class for adults, children and families interested in experimenting with clay for the first time. Plan a great afternoon with friends, family, or just for you while exploring your inner artist in this fun and messy introduction to clay! Projects take between 1.5- 2 hours. SPACE IS LIMITED. “Music In The Park” Returns to Lasdon

The last installment of “Music in the Park” series returns on Friday to Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Somers.  “Reserved table seating is limited and costs $25 per person. General admission tickets are $10 per person for all ages. All tickets may be purchased at the door. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check or credit card.

The gates open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 7 p.m. , ending at 9 p.m.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. General admission concert-goers should plan on lawn seating and should bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. No pets are allowed. The event will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

Cultural Celebrations in Westchester

On Sunday August 20th from noon-6 head to Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla for the Jewish celebration!  Festivals are held rain or shine.  Bring blankets or folding chairs to sit on the lawn.

 

10th Annual Lemonade For Leukemia

On Saturday, August 19th (Rain Date Sunday August 20th) from 12-4pm swing by 38 Hobart Avenue in Port Chester, NY  for lemondade, crafts, hot dogs, baked goodies and more! This is a wonderful way to make a donation and help others.  To learn more or make a donation click here.

 

Renaissance Faire

The NY Renaissance Faire is back and started last weekend!  “A Renaissance Faire is a recreation of a Renaissance or Medieval village. It is filled with costumed actors, crafts and games to give patrons the illusion that they have stepped back in time. The New York Renaissance Faire features more than 125 performances on 20 stages, and over 100 craftspeople, all set within 65 acres of beautiful forest.”  The fair takes place in Tuxedo Park, NY on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, Aug. 5 – Oct. 1st from 10am – 7pm.

 

Other weekend ideas?

The movies are always a fun weekend option.  New to theaters, The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.  Still in theaters is the Emoji Movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Wonder Woman.

 

 

What about a Farmer’s Market?  Pleasantville has a great one Saturdays from 8:30-1pm! 

Harrison's also has a great Farmers Market open Saturdays, from 8:30-1 from May 20th to November 18th at Ma Riis Park by the train station.

Rye also has a great Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 8:30-2pmin the parking lot behind Village Social and Chase Bank (Theodore Fremd Ave.)

 

Have you checked out Fun Fuzion in New Rochelle yet.  Fun Fuzion is Westchester’s only indoor amusement park.  There’s bowling, mini golf, billiards, lazer tag, and a fun house with games and rides.  There’s also a movie theater next door! Definitely a spot worth visiting! 

Legoland is a fun place to visit with the kids! 

 

What about a baseball game? The Mets are home taking on the Marlins, while the Yankees are on the road.

 

Perhaps the Zoo?  Nearby ones include the Bronx Zoo, The Central Park Zoo  and the Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut. 

 

Maybe take a stroll around the New York Botanical Gardens- Artworks by renowned artist CHIHULY will be on display until October 29th.  Check out the “breathtaking works of art that dazzle with color, light, and form—by day and night.”

 

And Bowlmor bowling alley is a fun option in White Plains!

 

Westchester Beaches-Croton Point, Croton-on-Hudson, Playland, Rye and Glen Island, New Rochelle Friday, June 23 - Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 4: Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday & Tuesday except holidays)  Hours: 11 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.; no admittance after 6 p.m.

 

The Greenwich beaches are open year round, but Park/Beach Passes are required from May 1 to October 31.  

 

Another fun spot to check out, which often has fun weekend activities is Muscoot Farm
