Less than a week to Thanksgiving and then the true holiday madness begins.  In all the craziness try and remember the true meaning behind Thanksgiving, not food, fighting and long lines, it’s about togetherness and being thankful.  Have a great weekend!

 

8Track at The Cap

 

Tonight, Friday, November 17th at 8pm, “Prepare yourself to be transported back into the Greatest Era of Rock and Roll Music...the 1970's.”  8Track features our very own Greg DiMiceli, music teacher at BMP RSS! So head to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester tonight!

 

Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze

The blaze has tickets available for 11/24 and 11/25 and then will end.  So if you want to see it this year, grab your tickets now!  “The tri-state area’s biggest, most electrifying fall event returns for 40 delightful nights in 2017!

See more than 7,000 individually hand-carved, illuminated jack o’ lanterns in this elaborate walk-through experience. Meander through an historic, 18th-century riverside landscape and discover a breathtaking display – all made of jack o’ lanterns!

Come gawk at more jack o'lanterns than ever before. Tens of thousands of visitors experienced last year’s Blaze, which was sold out EVERY NIGHT! Complete with sound effects, elaborate synchronized lighting and an all-original soundtrack by recording artist Richard Christy, this not-to-be-missed spectacle is the area's most innovative Halloween happening.”

Rye Library


Today, Friday, from 4-5pm, kids in grades 3-5 can participate in the Gadgets Science Fun Club.  This activity “offers children a chance to engage in hands -on-inquiry-based experiments.  In this one-hour science club, participants will focus on a different S.T.E.M. activity each month with handouts to follow up at home.  Through this program children will begin to see that science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts can be fun. Space is limited.  Pre-registration is required at www.ryelibrary.org.   

And on Saturday, the Rye Storytellers Guild: Tellabration will take place from 3-6pm.  “This annual event features the telling of stories throughout the world on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Please bring a friend and enjoy this evening of stories meant for grown-ups. Refreshments will be served.”

 

Harrison Library

Today, Friday, Yoga with Angela will take place from 4-5pm.  “Relaxing , soothing and fun. Peaceful. Like a day off. This is how tweens describe yoga with local instructor Angela Brandt. Ages 7-12.”

On Saturday from 10:30-11:30 head to the library for Saturday Stories (& a Craft, too!)  “Ease into Saturday at the Library's Children's Discovery Center.  Between 10:30 and 11:15 AM Manhattanville College student volunteers will  informally read favorite picture books and do a craft.  No session 11/25.  Suggested for ages 2 to 4 years.”

On Sunday from 1:30-3:30 come check out this purrfect way to spend the day!  It’s Kitty Yoga!  “Yoga in the company of cats. Adoptable kittens are coming to the library for Kitty Yoga.  Adults & ages 12 & over, accompanied by an adult.”  Register for this event online.


And finally, Sing Along Sundays with Chloe will take place on Sunday from 4-4:30pm.  This is a great way to “celebrate early childhood through music and movement!  Children and parents are sure to love the captivating songs, live accordion music, and activities designed with specific cognitive milestones in mind.  This class will feature a variety of child-sized instruments and props, and a wealth of both traditional and original songs to add to your singalong repertoire!  Get ready for a fun, creative, and engaging experience!”

 

 

Bruce Museum

The Bruce Museum is a hidden gem located just up the road from us in nearby Greenwich, CT.  After you’ve checked out the museum, head across the street to a super fun playground the kids are sure to love!  

On Friday don’t miss the Marine Tank Animal Feeding from 2:30pm - 2:45pm.

Sunday from 11:30-12:15pm, head out on a Family Gallery Tour.  “Designed for families with children ages 6-10. These tours, led by a Museum educator,  provide an interactive, discussion-based exploration of the Museum's current exhibitions. Free with admission; no registration required.”

Lastly, Science Sunday: Mystery Minerals will be taking place on Sunday from 1-3pm.  “A drop-in program designed for children aged 4 and up and their families. Participants will explore simple science concepts and subjects while partaking in fun, kid-friendly experiments, projects and crafts inspired by the Museum’s collections and exhibitions.  This program is free with general admission and no advance registration is required.

There are over 4,500 known minerals on Earth! Join us as we look at and identify a few mysterious ones by using some basic geologic concepts. This program is inspired by our new science exhibit, Treasures of the Earth: Mineral Masterpieces from the Robert R. Weiner Collection.”



Westchester Children’s Museum


Good news! The Westchester Children’s Museum is open for business and for you and the kids to enjoy!  This “sunlit, colorful, vibrant learning space is filled with interactive exhibits that explore science, art, technology, design and the environment, with places to build, play, and create.”  The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays 10-4.  Current exhibits include:

From Friday, September 15th until November 30th, the American Dream Collection: Works by Lynn Mara will be on display!  “Drawing inspiration from the beauty of her natural surroundings and the wide spectrum of American iconography, artist Lynn Mara  captures the vibrancy of the American spirit through her paintings. Her Impressionist style, bright, colorful palate, and distinct subject matter ranging from bold images of the American Flag, energetic equestrian scenes, to sun-bleached landscapes are joyful and accessible for young visitors.

Artist Lynn Mara is the Winner of the Design a Bus Contest for the 40th Anniversary of the Hampton Jitney, her bus can be seen traveling between Long Island and Manhattan. She was also named Winner of the 2017 HAMPTON CLASSIC poster design. The artist is a devoted mother of four sons, and lives and works in Greenwich CT. with her husband Frank.On View in the Westchester Children’s Museum Art Gallery.”

 

Caring Santa at The Westchester

This event will take place on Sunday from 8:30-10 for Children with Special Needs. “Caring Santa is coming to town! Reserve your spot for a private photo experience today.  Caring Santa will be waiting on Level 1 Center Court.”

 

Michael’s


Most Saturdays from 10-12 Michael’s offers a fun Kids Club® craft that kids can participate in while their parents shop.  This Saturday’s project is making Kids Club® Felt Banner.  “The cost is $2 per project and supplies are included.  Sign up in store or online, or just drop in.  Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.”

Also on Saturday from 1-3pm, stop by for MAKEbreak Holiday Wreaths.  You buy the “wreath base, and the supplies to decorate it will be provided.  Dazzle your guests with a gorgeous winter wreath.  Kids can make a free craft stick reindeer.”

Finally, on Sunday from 1-3pm check out MAKEbreak Personalized Ornaments.  Buy the ornament, and the rest of the supplies are provided.

 

Lakeshore


Lakeshore also hosts a free craft workshop for kids most Saturdays from 11-3pm.  This Saturday’s craft also sounds super fun, creating a Quirky Turkey Craft!  Appropriate for kids ages 3 & up. No reservation necessary. Free.”

 

Clay Art Center’s Drop In Class

Every Saturday from 2 - 4pm, drop in for a fun clay class.  Cost is $30/adult and $20 for children under 12.  This fee includes material and firing.  “Have fun in this one-time class for adults, children and families interested in experimenting with clay for the first time. Plan a great afternoon with friends, family, or just for you while exploring your inner artist in this fun and messy introduction to clay! Projects take between 1.5- 2 hours.

Westchester Knicks

Lucky for us, we are able to watch some awesome basketball being played up close at the Westchester County Center.  The Westchester Knicks are the exclusive NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers.  Sunday at 3pm, they are taking on the Lakeland Magic.  Get tickets here.

 

Stamford Nature Center

The Stamford Museum & Nature Center is great place to walk around, see animals and check out the playground.  In addition, on Sundays November 12 - December 10 11:30 am - 4 pm you can check out Sunday Explorers.  “Head to the SM&NC for the return of our popular Sunday drop-in programs! Meet one of our Heckscher Farm animals, try your hand at a scavenger hunt on the trails, see Sadie and Bert, our North American River Otters, get their lunch, or help to feed some animals in Heckscher WILD! (First-come, first-served; recommended for ages 5 and up.)

Next up, "remember those crazy contraptions that would spin, rock, and play music - and they were made from tag sale treasures and overlooked common objects?

 

Yes, the ingenious inventions of sculptor - and SM&NC favorite - Steve Gerberich will return to the Stamford Museum Galleries for a totally re-imagined Holiday Exhibition. Gerberich has gathered his most outstanding and outlandish large-scale kinetic sculptures and installations for a showing of the "Best of Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys." Working with old machine parts, kitchen utensils, furniture scraps, lighting fixtures, medical supplies, toys, and carnival figurines, Gerberich mixes the aesthetics of contemporary sculpture with the scientific principles of simple mechanical motion. It's crazy fun!

Museum galleries are open Monday-Saturday, 9am - 5pm; Sunday 11am - 5pm."

 

 

Shows At WPPAC

Two shows come to the stage this weekend at the White Plains Performing Arts Center.  "BURSTING WITH ENERGY AND PACKED WITH HITS!

A touching and hilarious ‘tell-it-like-it-is’ look at the lives of a group of female friends, GIRLS NIGHT: The Musical promises to have audiences laughing, crying and dancing in the aisles! “If the show were a cocktail, it’d be made up of two parts ‘Sex in the City’, one part ‘Desperate Housewives’ and a dash of ‘Grease’.”  Friday, November 17 @ 8pm | Tickets starting at $27."

Next up, "A MULTIMEDIA CONCERT PERFORMANCE.  A joyous celebration of music, spoken word and visuals, The Langston Hughes Project recreates a magical moment in our cultural history that makes heads bob, fingers snap and feet tap throughout. November 18 @ 8pm | Tickets starting at $27."

Westchester Broadway Theatre Production of Annie

Annie Get Your Gun is on stage at the Westchester Broadway Theatre from September 14 - November 26, 2017 and returns December 28, 2017 - January 28, 2018.  “Set in the Wild West, where Frank Butler is the sharpest sharpshooter around and the heart-throb of Buffalo Bill's traveling Wild West show. He'll take on any challenge... and win. That is, until Frank meets his match in the rough and ready tomboy sharpshooter, Annie Oakley. Romantic sparks fly, but as long as he is competitive and she is stubborn the course of true love never will run smooth. Mamaroneck Turkey Trot

Get in the Thanksgiving spirit with a Turkey Trot!  The 51st Annual Village of Mamaroneck Turkey Trot 5K and Gobbler 1 mile will take place on Sunday, November 19th at Harbor Island Park.  Pre-registration has ended but you can register the day of the race at Harbor Island.

Turkey Trot 5K (3.1 mile): 12 Years of age and older starts at 10:15

Gobbler Race (1 Mile): 12 years of age and younger starts at 9:45

Price is $40.

 

Hudson River Museum

Have you checked out the Hudson River Museum and Planetarium yet?  “The Hudson River Museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural complex that draws its identity from its site on the banks of the Hudson River, actively reaching out to broaden the horizons of all of its visitors.”

Early Explorers takes place on Saturdays & Sundays from 1 - 4pm.  This is a “safe space for children to explore, play, and create with their families. The room hosts a large-scale dollhouse, blocks, puppet theater, and books. A Junior Docent is present to answer questions and suggest activities.  Must be accompanied by a caregiver. Up to age 5.”

Special events happening this weekend include from 12-2pm Saturday “Master the media of graphite, charcoal, and soft pastel with artist Terry Kessler Schwarz, who will teach participants how to depict water scenes in the Museum's galleries and workshop spaces.  Free with general admission.

Also happening Saturday from 2-3pm, “KIDS EXPLORE THE LANDSCAPE WITH ZAFIRO ACEVEDO.  In this hands-on workshop series led by artist Zafiro Acevedo, participants will examine classical landscape elements and create works using natural elements such as pine cones, grass, and leaves in addition to traditional art materials. Recommended for ages 5–10.  Free with general admission.”

Barnes & Noble

On Saturday at 11am don’t miss the Bear Says Thanks Storytime Special Event.  “Join us for this special Storytime in celebration of Thanksgiving. When Bear decides to throw a feast to thank his friends, they show up one by one with different platters of delicious food to share. There's just one problem: Bear's cupboards are bare! What is he to do? Find out at Storytime, with activities to follow.”

Our closest store is in City Center in White Plains but other nearby locations include Eastchester’s new store complete with a fabulous café!

 

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones museum is another amazing place for the kids.  Located about 20 minutes north of Rye Brook, in Norwalk, CT, it’s perfect for the whole family! Check them out here, then head on over for a fun filled day of learning and hands-on activities the kids will adore!

Maritime Aquarium


There is always SO much going on at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT.


For all of November, celebrate our Veterans with Veterans Gratitude Month.  “The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is offering free Aquarium admission to all active-duty military as well as to veterans of our armed forces.”

Have you checked out "Journey With Jellies" A bigger & even better jellyfish exhibit yet?  “Get close to some of the most strangely beautiful – but painfully dangerous – animals in the sea as The Maritime Aquarium presents a newly expanded exhibit of jellyfish, including species we've never displayed before!  See Pacific sea nettles in an enormous new display, bizarre flower-hat jellies, "upside-down" jellies in a cool half-dome, and more!”  

Check out the Coral Reef Exhibit!  “A rainbow of colors dart and dash in our new 3,000-gallon Coral Reef exhibit, open now just past the Sea Turtles exhibit. Meet more than 40 species of reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific, including brilliantly colored varieties of tangs, triggerfish, wrasses and more. Displays explain why reef systems are so important to the ocean, yet why they’re also so fragile.

Other weekend ideas?

The movies are always a fun weekend option. Seems like there's a lot of new releases this weekend.  Justice League, Wonder, and The Star hit theaters this weekend!  Thor: Ragnarok is also still out.  I'm looking forward to Wonder!


What about a Farmer’s Market?  Pleasantville has a great one Saturdays from 8:30-1pm!  

Harrison's also has a great Farmers Market open Saturdays, from 8:30-1 from May 20th to November 18th at Ma Riis Park by the train station.

Rye also has a great Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 8:30-2pm in the parking lot behind Village Social and Chase Bank (Theodore Fremd Ave.)

 

Have you checked out Fun Fuzion in New Rochelle yet.  Fun Fuzion is Westchester’s only indoor amusement park.  There’s bowling, mini golf, billiards, lazer tag, and a fun house with games and rides.  There’s also a movie theater next door! Definitely a spot worth visiting! 

 

Legoland is also a fun place to visit with the kids!  Lego Star Wars Days are happening this weekend at Legoland, November 17-19th. "Jedi, Droids and Clone Troopers return for intergalactic fun during LEGOLAND Discovery Center LEGO® Star Wars™ Days. Travel to a galaxy not so far way to enjoy tons of family fun activities and Star Wars™ themed building. We can't wait to see you there!

Activities Include:

- Meet members of the Star Wars costume fan groups

Perhaps the Zoo?  Nearby ones include the Bronx Zoo, The Central Park Zoo  and the Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut. 

 

Maybe take a stroll around the New York Botanical Gardens.  The Train Show arrives next weekend!“

 

And Bowlmor bowling alley is a fun option in White Plains!
