Bedford School Year Ends with Graduation, Moving Up,and Budget Passage

SCHOOL YEAR ENDS WITH GRADUATION,
MOVING UP, BUDGET PASSAGE
Celebrations -
The 2015-2016 school year ended with celebrations of student accomplishments at all three levels, and with voter approval of the revised school budget proposal for 2016-2017.

FLHS celebrated the graduation of nearly 400 seniors in a joyful, light-hearted ceremony at Caramoor on June 21. The Moving Up of 5th graders to FLMS was marked in events at each of the five elementary schools on June 22, with their local flavors and unique customs much in evidence. From the five schools, some 325 5th graders were moved on to the middle level. FLMS conducted its own Moving Up ceremonies for almost 370 8th graders on June 23, fittingly enough at FLHS, first in more personalized settings for each House, and then with the whole school gathered in the gymnasium.

These celebrations of student accomplishment reminded parents, family, school staff, and the students themselves, of the core mission of BCSD - the education, nurturing, and growth of every single student, every single day.

School Budget for 2016-2017 -
On June 21, more than 3,400 voters turned out; 73% said yes to the proposal for a 2016-2017 BCSD budget of $126.8MM, which was officially enacted by the Board of Education on June 22.

This was the District's second budget proposal of the spring. On May 17 more than 4,400 voters turned out; 59% said yes to a budget $2.85MM higher than the June 21 proposal. But that number failed to meet the NYS threshold of 60% approval for a budget over the tax levy cap, leading to the second proposal finally approved on June 21 and 22, under the tax levy cap.
New School Year; New Superintendent -

The new school year officially begins on July 1, when new Superintendent of Schools Dr. Chris Manno will be sworn in, along with the new Board of Education.

Interim Superintendent John Chambers completes service on June 30; look for a final report from him around that time.
Students are due back for the first day of classes on September 1, 2016.
