Local Talent: Elena Wolfe, Snap Couture Photography

Almost anywhere you go these days, there are a lot of photographers. And really, I mean a lot of them. Recent advancements in digital imagery technology have made artists out of amateurs, for better or worse. The competition is tough, to say the least. Choosing the right photographer for your event can be an overwhelming task. But every now and then you run across one whose work and professionalism stands heads and shoulders above the rest. Talent isn't everything, but it sure helps when you're in a field this competitive.

I met Elena last summer, having been introduced to her via another mom friend. 'Call her, she does great work', encouraged my friend. So I set up my appointment for a photo shoot of my then three year old daughter and in my sleep deprived state at the time, promptly forgot it.

Elena showed up as scheduled at my doorstep on a sweltering summer day with a tiny bouquet of ribbon-wrapped daisies, just perfect for my daughter's little hand. When I explained that I had completely forgotten the appointment she only paused a brief second or two to reflect, saying 'Hmm, I guess I have to be prepared for this because this is what mothers do — can you get her dressed while I wait outside?' Mortified at my foggy brain cells failing me once again, I quickly got my daughter into something photographable and marveled at her work ethic.

She spent the next hour snapping simply stunning shots of my daughter. I will treasure the photos forever and I feel nothing short of gratitude that she captured my daughter's beauty and spirit so well. Because if you are a parent, you know how fleeting those first years are and that your opportunities for capturing those moments that will forever melt your heart are limited. But Elena got her shots.

The work has a perfectly natural feel, with lovely attention to detail and an impressive balance of light, focus and color. Of course I am biased, but even my friends and family gasp when they see the photos. 'Who did these?', they say. I'm always very happy to refer them to Elena.

Photographing children — no small feat in and of itself — is not her only skill. Her business is called Snap Couture Photography and it's appropriately named. Her wedding, portraiture and lifestyle work all glow with a keen sensitivity to both subject and setting. This photographer is an artist, with or without the digital age.

Follow her blog to keep up with her latest projects. And be sure to check out Elena's web site to see what I'm talking about and book your own appointment. Or purchase a session for a friend or family member for a unique and appreciated holiday gift!
