Harvey Gets Key League Win

Harvey’s varsity basketball team improved to 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in the HVAL when the Cavaliers shook off the cobwebs from a four-day layoff and beat the South Kent Cardinals Wednesday 56-46.

It was a back and forth affair as the Cavaliers were slow getting out of the gate and found themselves in an 11-point hole early on, trailing 19-8.  Harvey regrouped and went on a huge 22-2 run led by a barrage of fast break points and some hot shooting from Ricky Hicks and Jovell Forsythe to take a 30 – 21 lead into halftime.

The second half, however, was much like the first, as Harvey again came out sluggish and South Kent quickly tied the game up on three consecutive 3-pointers. The game remained tight throughout the whole second half, and with two minutes left, Harvey had a one point lead. With the Cardinals in the penalty, the Cavaliers won the game by hitting their foul shots. Harvey went 22 of 26 from the stripe and missed only one free throw in the last two minutes to stretch the lead to 10.

Harvey coach Dom Narcisco credits the reserves with getting the team back on track. “The guys off the bench really sparked us in that first half to get us going on that run,” said Coach Narcisco.

Three Harvey players scored in double figures. Hicks led with 16. Forsythe had 14 and Rohan Cassells had 12. Cassells also collected seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Senior Jack Mather chipped in with six points and took a big charge that helped Harvey late in the game.

Lazar Pavicevio and Chris Watts combined to score 33 of South Kent’s 46 total points.

The Cavaliers will be home Friday to face King, looking to go two-for-two this season against the Vikings from Stamford, Connecticut.
