Concerts Around the Corner, “Impressionist and Abstract Music and Art”

The Cultural Arts Coalition presents, “Impressionist and Abstract Music and Art”, Sunday, July 12, 2015, 5:00PM at Studio Around the Corner

This concert will explore impressionist and abstract music and its connection to the parallel styles in visual arts. Although audiences are generally more excited by non-representational, abstract art then they are of abstract music, we’ve chosen a program of atmospheric and accessible modern works as well as tuneful and romantic impressionist pieces we feel the audience will enjoy. Our musical selections were inspired by the bold and colorful work of artist, Joan Gillman Smith, whose exhibit ULTERIOR MOTIFS is currently on display.

The performers are Robert Zubrycki, violin; Adria Benjamin, viola; Katherine Cherbas, cello; Jennifer Tao, piano; Nathan Brewster, percussion. Joan Gillman Smith’s ULTERIOR MOTIFS, Mixed Media Paintings, Collages and Cutouts, features stunning Matisse inspired cutouts, as well as works dominated by color, line, shape and pattern. Also for this event the Studio’s Artists in Residence space will include works by Sharon Nakazato, Judika Lieberman, Carl Mazzella, Lynda O'Connor and Anna Hanvey.

The program will open with two brief works, John Cage’s Old North, from Apartment House 1776 and Morton Feldman’s Durations IV. These men shared the compositional philosophy of “getting rid of the glue so that the sounds would be themselves” – a very similar aesthetic can be found in abstract art. Next on the program, Lou Harrison’s Varied Trio, while contemporary, is very melodic. His inspirations included the French painter Jean-Honore Fragonard as well as Javanese Gamelan music. The trio is scored for violin, piano and percussion, including vibraphone, drums, rice bowls and baking pans! The impressionists will be represented here by Claude Debussy’s Poissons d’or for solo piano, Maurice Ravel’s Pièce en Forme de Habanera for cello and piano and Gabriel Faure’s Quartet for Piano and Strings in G minor.

Violinist, Robert Zubrycki, is the president of the Cultural Arts Coalition and is also an active performer within many facets of New York’s music world - from chamber music to Broadway. He is currently a member of the orchestra for the Tony award winning musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Concertmaster for the New York City Chamber Orchestra and a member of the American Symphony Orchestra. He will be joined by his colleagues from these and other prestigious ensembles for this program at the Studio.

Pianist, Jennifer Tao began studies at the age of five and first appeared with an orchestra at the age of ten. A year later she won critical acclaim for her performance as soloist with conductor Arthur Fiedler. She went on to win prizes in numerous distinguished competitions and enjoy an international career. She is currently a member of the piano faculty at Princeton University. Jennifer will perform on the Coalition’s Steinway L Series grand piano, on extended loan from Cheryl Palmer & Estate of Edward H Vito, Sr., made possible in part by the generosity of Rob and Stefani Gosselink.
