Harvey Weekly Spring Sports Wrap for May 5

Girls Lacrosse Wins on Seniors Day

Harvey’s girls lacrosse team eked out another one-point victory Monday, May 4, defeating Chase 9-8 and improving to 8-0 on Seniors Day.

Harvey coach Greg Janos thought his team’s last game, a 12-11 decision over defending champion Watkinson, might have caused the Lady Cavaliers to take the Chase team too lightly. “I think we were still on a high from Friday's exciting win and we were caught off guard by Chase,” said the coach. “The Chase team took it to us. They came at us hard and never let up, but thankfully we were able to grind out a win.”

Harvey got a great game from senior Tiaja Downer who scored two goals and displayed her skills at coming up with ground balls and stopping Chase from doing more damage. The coach also credits the victory to some excellent goalkeeping from senior Ariana Weaver who made a number of eight-meter saves to secure the win. Weaver finished with 10 saves.

Freshman Julia Mallon of Katonah led Harvey in scoring with three goals. Another freshman, Katonah’s Sadie Albert added two goals and had two assists. Senior Aliya Mayers and eighth-grader Sophia Scarsella each had a goal and an assist.

Harvey travels Thursday to play to The Master's School of Connecticut and then Wooster Saturday.

An Overtime Loss for Harvey Boys Lacrosse

Harvey’s boys lacrosse team lost a tough battle in its final home game Monday, May 4, against the Dragons of Greens Farms Academy.

After getting behind early 2-0, the Cavaliers fought back to tie the game at 4-4 at the half. The Cavs would take the lead early in the third but quickly fell down two. After stout defending led by captain Tom Smith and goalie Brian Benjamin, Harvey came back to tie the game 7-7 and send it into overtime for the second straight game. Unfortunately, the Cavs could not pull it out when Greens Farms scored in sudden death to win the game, 8-7. It was back-to-back overtime losses as Harvey fell 7-6 Saturday to The Masters School.

Senior captain Connor Wilson led Harvey in scoring with three goals and three assists. Senior Joe Sorrentino and junior Harry Albert each had two goals.

The Cavs fall to 3-5 on the season but look to take down rival Chase Collegiate Wednesday.

Harvey Baseball Drops to 2-9

Harvey’s baseball team lost 7-3 to Christian Heritage Saturday, May 2, in a game the Cavaliers led until the bottom of the fourth inning.

Harvey was in control of this game early on the strength of solid pitching by junior Andrew Scherl and the hitting of senior Jackson Roberts.

In the top of the fourth inning, with Harvey trying to tack on to a 2-1 lead, and Roberts on second, senior Austin Forman stroked a two-out single up the middle. Roberts tried to score from second, but was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from the Christian Heritage centerfielder.

This may have shifted the momentum of the game to Christian Heritage who had runners on first and third on back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fourth. A double steal allowed the tying run to score, and then an overthrow to third allowed the go ahead run to score. Christian Heritage picked up two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run error.

Scherl pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked three. For the offense, Roberts stayed hot, collecting three hits and three RBI.

Each team had eight hits.

Harvey Baseball Loses to South Kent

In easily the most exciting and intense game of the year for the Harvey varsity baseball team, the Cavaliers, came up just short at home against undefeated and back-to- back HVAL champions South Kent Friday, May 1, losing 5-4.

South Kent went up 1-0 early in the first on back-to-back errors by Harvey infielders and walks by starting pitcher John Colangelo. The Cavaliers came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs of their own on an RBI single by Austin Forman and a sacrifice fly by Pierce Steinberg.

Harvey scored two more runs in the bottom of the second when the South Kent pitcher walked two with one out. After a double steal, the shortstop committed an error allowing two more runs to score, putting Harvey up 4-1 after three innings.

Colangelo settled in on the mound after a rough first inning, but in the top of the fourth, he hit the leadoff man, and with one out, gave up three consecutive hard hits, including a bases clearing triple to give South Kent a 5-4 lead.

Harvey went quietly in the fifth and sixth innings, but with two out in the bottom of the seventh and trailing by one run, Steinberg reached first on a walk and gave way to pinch runner freshman Jake Reber. Colangelo then hit a first pitch fastball in the hole between short and third. The shortstop made a good play and, with the second baseman failing to cover first, it was a footrace between the shortstop and Reber to get to the second base bag. In a very close play, the umpire called Reber out at second to end the game. The loss marked the third time this season Harvey has lost a league game by a score of 5-4.

Colangelo pitched a complete game, allowing only three earned runs on four hits. He walked five and struck out four. Forman had two of Harvey’s four hits.

Rugby Losses for Boys and Girl Teams

Harvey’s boys varsity rugby team suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday, May 2, falling 47-5 to Xavier High School, the #4 ranked team in the country.

The opening minutes saw some back and forth play with neither team able to find gaps in their opponent’s defense.  In the seventh minute, following multiple phases, Xavier was on Harvey’s doorstep and, after one held try, the Knights finally found points.

In the 21st minute, Xavier capitalized on owning possession and converted to up its lead to 14 points. In the next 10 minutes Harvey had opportunities but could not fully execute as the forwards failed to link up with the backs. Sophomore Rafael Tapia and the backline made inroads to Xavier territory but the Cavaliers were stymied time and time again.

In the 30th minute Xavier scored off an attacking scrum in Harvey’s zone to widen its lead. Despite the mounting deficit, Harvey fought to gain possession as the forwards and backs worked well and played some aggressive rugby.

With time winding down in the half, Harvey ran a penalty 15 meters out and the backs worked the ball at pace to a racing Malcolm Koonce who smashed into the tryzone for Harvey’s first points, making the score 21-5 for Xavier at the half.

In the second half, the Cavaliers continued to fight but could not string together multiple phases of solid rugby. Solid tackling by John Jay High School’s Reed Feldman and Ilan Gressel helped, but the boys were not able to retain ball and push into Xavier territory. Xavier found additional points in the 43rd, 57th, 67th and stoppage time to earn the decisive victory.

Harvey’s second side saw some action against Xavier and showed some good play. Adam Penino, Mike Wilson and South Salem’s Jarrod Waner spearheaded an improved effort in the second half and left the coaching staff encouraged due to their efforts.

Harvey, last year’s Tier 2 state champion, hopes to meet Xavier in a month at the NY State Rugby Championship to turn the tables and avenge this defeat. The Cavalier hit the road Wednesday, May 6, to take on New Rochelle.

Meanwhile, the girls went down to a 25-5 defeat at home Sunday, May 3, in a very evenly matched battle with Union NJ Mud Turtles. Harvey's lone try was scored by sophomore Brianna Casino demolishing their defense along the way.

Despite the loss, coach Susan Harris was pleased with the way the girls performed.  “It was the best 15s game we've played this season,” said the coach

Harvey plays its final match of the season Saturday when the Lady Cavaliers host the Prusa Play Rugby USA Club.

Harvey’s softball team was blanked 15-0 Wednesday, April 29, by Christian Heritage in Trumbull, Connecticut.

The game was decided early as Christian Heritage exploded for six runs in the first inning and that was enough for Lady Kingsmen pitcher Tiffany Diao who cruised to a one-hit 12 strikeout performance in the five-inning game.

Junior Taylor Williams had Harvey’s only hit. Junior Selena Cummings was the starting and losing pitcher for the Lady Cavaliers who fell to 1-2 on the season.
