Bedford's A Walk in the Park Event is June 8th

A WALK IN THE PARK, Bedford Hills Memorial Park

On Wednesday evening June 8th the Town of Bedford's environmental consultant, Beth Evans and Chairman of the town's Wetlands Commission Andrew Messinger will be leading a fascinating nature walk around and through Bedford Hills Memorial Park.  The park, which is surrounded by wetlands, some unexplored, and high density residential development also contains a graveyard, a sewage treatment plant, an abandoned municipal water well, numerous athletic fields and two swimming pools.  Lake Marie, which takes up about one fifth of park is fed by a system of drainage facilities, bio filtering systems and a stream.  Haines Road drains into the Lake as does a residential development and the Saw Mill River Parkway.  But in spite of all these 'wicked' issues nature thrives in the lake which is the home to 3-foot long carp, several species of frogs, several speciesof turtles, numerous waterfowl species and rumors of a large South American rodent the size of a cat.  All this in a spot that over 200 years ago was a serene cranberry bog.

Learn about the issues and learn about the environmental successes at this park.  Find out how wicked problems often have wicked solutions.  Learn what you can do to help as we move forward.  We'll walk, talk and explore as we watch Mother Nature and man try to co-exist.

Sign up is limited to 20 people.  Pre-registration is required by email at Recreation@Bedfordny.gov.  There is no fee and feel free to bring a snack.  We'll meet at 6 pm at the covered pavilion just behind the swimming pool.

Rain date is Thursday, June 9th.

Beth Evans has been Bedford's environmental consultant for several decades and works closely with the town Wetlands Commission.  Beth is the principal of Evans Environmental Consultants and she is currently the president of the Connecticut Society of Wetland Scientists.  Andrew Messinger has been on the town's Wetlands Commission for more than fifteen years and its chairman for the past 7.  He is a Cornell University certified master naturalist and a New York State DEC steward.
