School’s out for summer!  Many kids are leaving for sleepaway camp today, tomorrow and Sunday.  Wishing all of them the best summer ever and strength to their parents sending them off.  Though many are probably as excited as the kid, if not more so!  For everyone else, day camp, vacations, beaches, work, the pool and bbq’s are in store for the summer.  Enjoy!

 

Movie Night In Pine Ridge Park

Start of the weekend right here in Rye Brook at Pine Ridge Park where all Rye Brook Residents are invited to the free viewing of Storks, thank to the Rye Brook Rec. Dept.  The movie starts at 8:15pm.  Just bring your lawn chair or blanket and a few dollars for refreshments!

 

Annual Food Truck Festival

Rye Recreation presents the 2nd Annual Food Truck Festival on Saturday from 1:00-5:00pm at Rye Recreation Park (281 Midland Ave.)  There will be yummy food and  drink, as well as live music.

Rye Ridge Shopping Center Sidewalk Sale

From Thursday, June 22-Saturday, June 24th,  the shops in Rye  Ridge Shopping Center will be holding their annual Sidewalk Sale featuring lots of great discounted items as well as giveaways, popcorn, balloons, cotton candy, and face painting from 12-3.

 

Rye Library

Today, Friday, June 23rd from 2-3:30pm, kids going into K-5th grade in September can enjoy the Extreme Magic of Eric Wilzig as part of the 2017 Summer Reading Program Kickoff Event.  “Considered one of the hottest rising stars in the magic industry, award-winning illusionist Eric Wilzig has captivated audiences worldwide with his touring theater-style show and close-up magic.  With thousands of national and international performances, including an ovation-filled act on NBC's hit TV show America's Got Talent, Eric has made magic cool again!”

 

Larchmont Library

Also today, at the Larchmont Library, kids of all ages can enjoy the Button Making Bonanza from 3-4:30pm.  “No registration required. Come to the library, register for the summer reading program, and create your own button to take home!”

 

Harrison Library

Today, Friday, at the Harrison Library, check out Chloe's Sign and Play from 3-3:30pm.  “Give your child the gift of language! 

Sign & Play is a fun class where families can learn to communicate with their pre-verbal children using real signs from American Sign Language. 

Based on the award-winning Baby Signing Time series, this class will give parents a window into the hearts and minds of their little ones. Through fun songs, stories and games, parents and children will learn many useful signs for everyday communication. Come sign with us!”

Cat lovers will love this one!  Kitty Yoga with Angela Brandt and FURR911 will take place tomorrow, Saturday, from 2-3pm.  “Adults & ages 12 & over, accompanied by an adult -- Yoga in the company of cats. Adoptable kittens are coming to the library for Kitty Yoga.  Registration  preferred.”

 

Bruce Museum

The Bruce Museum is a hidden gem located just up the road from us in nearby Greenwich, CT.  After you’ve checked out the museum, head across the street to a super fun playground the kids are sure to love! 

On Friday from 2:30-2:45pm, check out the Marine Tank Animal Feeding.

On Sunday, from 1-4pm, don’t miss the Bruce Museum Seaside Center Grand Opening at Greenwich Point Park

Westchester Children’s Museum

Good news! The Westchester Children’s Museum is open for business and for you and the kids to enjoy!  This “sunlit, colorful, vibrant learning space is filled with interactive exhibits that explore science, art, technology, design and the environment, with places to build, play, and create.”  The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays 10-4.  Current exhibits include:

Good Deed of the Month Club is taking place on Saturday from 11-12.  “Join us every month in our Make a Difference with Loukoumi Book Nook for a kindness-themed book reading and discussion followed by an art-educator led good deed project. Let’s make a difference together at Westchester Children’s Museum! This program will be held every fourth Saturday of the month. Sponsored by the Make a Difference with Loukoumi Foundation.  Included with Museum Admission.”

Art Gallery: Chris Brown Illustrations

Opening March 29, on view through June 25, 2017, our gallery will be filled with fun, funny, and smart cartoons featuring the timely work of Westchester-based illustrator, Chris Brown. He is best known for his work featured in the Journal News, but has also illustrated books and magazines throughout the country.

 

Playland

Exciting news!  Playland is open for the season! Park hours this Friday are 12-11pm, Saturday 12-11pm and Sunday are 12-10pm.

 

Barnes & Noble

The Rainbow Fish Storytime Children’s event will take place on Saturday at 11am.  “This modern classic is celebrating its 25th year in print! With eye-catching foil stamping glittering on every page, it offers instant child appeal. But it is the universal message at the heart of this story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions that gives the book its lasting appeal. Activities to follow.”

Tabletop Gaming Gathering will take place on Saturday evening at 7pm. “Calling all fans of tabletop and strategy games! Bring your friends and join us at our monthly Tabletop Gaming Gathering. Play demos of featured games as we continue our 2017 Gaming Gathering events.”

Our closest Barnes & Noble is in White Plains, City Center but there are other nearby locations in Stamford, Palisades Center and Yonkers. And a newly opened location in Eastchester that has a restaurant too!

 

Stamford Museum and Nature Center

Maize Mysteries of an Ancient Grain- “This summer you can explore the science and history of maize and see why it continues to surprise us today. Learn about fascinating advances in the science of plant genetics, the process of evolution, and how "useful mutations" can address world health and hunger issues.”  This will take place from June 24-Sept 24.

And on Sunday The SM&NC Sunday Farm Market is back!  “Many favorites are returning and we've added some new vendors to offer a wider variety of items. Also available are our very own farm-fresh eggs made by our chickens on Heckscher Farm, maple syrup made in our own maple sugar "shack," and wool from our sheep.

There will be weekly farm-related family activities during our "Market Madness" programs led by one of our environmental educators. Programs begin June 25.”

Market Madness Sundays will take place Sundays, June 25 - August 13, 10 am - 2 pm.  “Support local farmers and explore the SM&NC through hands-on activities. Our Sunday Farm Market opens for the season on June 18 and will be the center of our Summer Sunday programs. Come for a self-guided craft on the meadow, farm animal meetings, and lunch with Bert & Sadie, our North American River Otters. At 12:30 pm join us for Edible Science, where we'll explore the science behind some of our favorite foods, such as pizza, S'mores, and ice cream.”

 

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones museum is another amazing place for the kids.  Located about 20 minutes north of Rye Brook, in Norwalk, CT, it’s perfect for the whole family! Check them out here, then head on over for a fun filled day of learning and hands-on activities the kids will adore!  

Mega Summer: Art and Movement Week is happening this weekend with lots of fun activities going on at Stepping Stones including Mutt-i-grees and Zumba! Check out the full line up of activities here.

 

Maritime Aquarium

There is always SO much going on at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT.

Check out the Coral Reef Exhibit!  “A rainbow of colors dart and dash in our new 3,000-gallon Coral Reef exhibit, open now just past the Sea Turtles exhibit.

Meet more than 40 species of reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific, including brilliantly colored varieties of tangs, triggerfish, wrasses and more.

Displays explain why reef systems are so important to the ocean, yet why they’re also so fragile.

Plus, learn how global ocean currents can connect water in reefs on the other side of the planet to our local Long Island Sound – and thus, how our stewardship of the Sound also means good stewardship of all Earth's marine ecosystems.”

The aquarium is definitely worth a trip up the Merritt or 95!

Hudson River Museum

The Hudson River Museum, in Yonkers, boasts an amazing Planetarium, six galleries, and a mansion!

Saturdays & Sundays 12 - 5 pm there’s “a safe space for children to explore, play, and create with their families.  The room hosts a large-scale dollhouse, blocks, puppet theater, and books.  A Junior Docent is present to answer questions and suggest activities.”

And Saturday and Sundays from 1-4, kids can do fun art projects.  This

Bicycle Sunday

“Bicycle Sundays on the Bronx River Parkway, one of Westchester’s longest-running and popular recreational programs, is scheduled for June 25; and Sept. 10, 17 and 24. The program is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During Bicycle Sundays, the parkway is open exclusively for bicyclists, joggers, walkers, foot scooters and strollers from Exit 22 at the Westchester County Center to Exit 4 at Scarsdale Road in Yonkers, a round-trip distance of 13 miles. The road is closed to automobiles in that stretch of parkway. Admission to the event is free. Parking is available at the County Center lot in White Plains for $7.”

Greenburgh Nature Center

Just off Central Avenue, the GNC is an amazing place for the whole family and often offers special events on the weekends. 

A Live Butterfly Exhibit will take place from June 24th- August 6th from 10-3.  “Come walk among the butterflies in our live butterfly exhibit, located in our enchanting Native Plant Meadow. Enjoy close encounters with butterflies and learn about their importance in nature. A truly unique experience.

Admission: Members are free. Non-members, $11 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $9 for children (age 2 and under are free). Cost includes admission to Manor House exhibits.”

Float Like a Butterfly is taking place on Saturday from 1-2pm.  “Members are free. Non-members, $11 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $9 for children.  Come celebrate the opening of our butterfly arbor! Join a naturalist on a short walk down to our beautiful native plant meadow. You’ll learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and discover the epic migration Monarch butterflies complete every year. Get up close and personal with our butterflies; if you’re lucky one might even land on you!”

Teaching Trails: Weekend Walks for All Ages will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.  “Join us on our community path for environmental education, generously supported by Con Edison.

This is a guided trail experience through our woodland forest. Our specially-trained “Trail Ninja” volunteers provide information on trees, plants, wildlife, and seasonal changes. The focus of each walk varies. An ideal way to get acquainted with our trail system. Program runs approximately 45 minutes. Free!"

 

 

Michael’s

Most Saturdays from 10-12 Michael’s offers a fun Kids Club® craft that kids can participate in while their parents shop.  This Saturday’s project is making Kids Club® Morph Sea Creature. The cost is $2 per project and supplies are included.  Sign up in store or online, or just drop in.  Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

In addition, another fun craft is happening on Sunday, Slime, from 1-3!  Kids will make a slime stress ball or customized slime.  All supplies provided including pre-made slime.

 

Lakeshore

Lakeshore also hosts a free craft workshop for kids most Saturdays from 11-3pm.  This Saturday’s craft also sounds super fun, creating an Under the Sea! Fishbowl!  Appropriate for kids ages 3 & up. No reservation necessary. Free.”

 

Clay Arts Center

Every Saturday from 2 - 4pm adults and children can “have fun in this one-time class for adults, children and families interested in experimenting with clay for the first time. Plan a great afternoon with friends, family, or just for you while exploring your inner artist in this fun and messy introduction to clay! Projects take between 1.5- 2 hours. SPACE IS LIMITED. Tickets go on sale at the front desk at 10am the day of class. Call us at 914-937-2047 to register or drop in by 1:45. First Come First Served.  Class maximum is 12 people.  $30 adult, $20 children under 12.”

 

Westchester Broadway Theatre Production of Mamma Mia

Ends this weekend!!  One of my favorite musicals of all time, ABBA’s Mamma Mia comes to the dinner theatre from March 23 - June 25th.  This will be the theatre’s 200th production.

“Based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA, Mamma Mia , is set on the Greek island of Kalokairi. A 20 year old woman named Sophie wants to have a traditional wedding and hopes her father will walk her down the aisle, but there's one problem: she has no idea who her father is! With help from her mother’s journal, she narrows the possibilities down to three men, and hilarity ensues as they all claim her as their child! Featuring all the hits you know and love, like“Dancing Queen”, “Thank You for the Music”, and, of course, “Mamma Mia!”, this show will have you singing and dancing in the aisles!”

Cultural Heritage Celebrations 2017

“Experience a variety of cultures from around the world this summer without leaving Westchester County during the annual Cultural Heritage Celebrations held in county parks.  Festivals will be held rain or shine.  Seating is informal; bring blankets or folding chairs for seating on the lawn.”  This Sunday from 12-7 come celebrate African-American heritage at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

 

 

Other weekend ideas?

The movies are always a fun weekend option.  New in theaters this weekend, Transformers: The Last Knight.  Cars 3 arrived on the big screen last weekend!  Still out and receiving rave reviews, Wonder Woman.  Captain Underpants and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales are still in theaters!

 

 

What about a Farmer’s Market?  Pleasantville has a great one Saturdays from 8:30-1pm! 

Rye also has a great Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 8:30-2pmin the parking lot behind Village Social and Chase Bank (Theodore Fremd Ave.)

 

Have you checked out Fun Fuzion in New Rochelle yet.  Fun Fuzion is Westchester’s only indoor amusement park.  There’s bowling, mini golf, billiards, lazer tag, and a fun house with games and rides.  There’s also a movie theater next door! Definitely a spot worth visiting! 

Legoland is a fun place to visit with the kids! 

 

What about a baseball game? The Mets are on the road this weekend taking on the Giants while the Yankees are on the home taking on the Rangers. 

 

Perhaps the Zoo?  Nearby ones include the Bronx Zoo, The Central Park Zoo  and the Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut. 

 

Maybe take a stroll around the New York Botanical Gardens.

And Bowlmor bowling alley is a fun option in White Plains!

 

Westchester Beaches-Croton Point, Croton-on-Hudson, Playland, Rye and Glen Island, New Rochelle Friday, June 23 - Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 4: Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday & Tuesday except holidays).  Hours: 11 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.; no admittance after 6 p.m.

 

The Greenwich beaches are open year round, but Park/Beach Passes are required from May 1 to October 31.  

Another fun spot to check out, which often has fun weekend activities is Muscoot Farm
