Trayvon Martin Defense Lawyer to Speak in Darien

The NAACP Norwalk Branch announced that Jasmine Rand, known for her representation of the Trayvon Martin family, will be the featured speaker at the 13th annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet on Sept. 27.

The event will take place at The Water's Edge at Giovanni's, located at 2748 Post Road in Darien, at 6 p.m.

Rand -- head of the Civil Rights Division of Parks & Crump, LLC in Tallahassee, Fla, -- will discuss the high-profile Trayvon Martin case, which has become a barometer of the Civil Rights status in this country.

This presentation coincides with the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, as set forth by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1963.

Rand has focused her career on the advocacy of human rights issues. In addition to her dynamic legal practice, she taught Legal Problems of the Poor at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University.

Utilizing media to bring attention to civil rights issues, she has been featured as a legal analyst on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, on shows such as, Nancy Grace, The O'Reilly Factor, Hard Ball with Chris Mathews, Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien, and has appeared in Spanish on Telemundo.

In 2012 Rand received the Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights Under Law's national Distinguished Civil Rights Advocate Award, "for fulfilling the legal profession's highest ideal in advancing equal justice for all."

She is currently involved in representing victims of police brutality cases throughout the nation.

Rev. Lindsay Curtis will be the master of ceremonies. Attorney Darnell Crosland is president of the Norwalk Branch of the NAACP.

Previous keynote speakers have included Congressional Majority WHIP James Clyburn; Sheff vs. O'Neill Attorney and Professor of Law John C. Brittain; author, archivist and historian Paul Robeson Jr. and Dr. Fred McKinney, president of the Greater New England Minority Supplier Development Council.
