Cool Cars for a Good Cause

On Saturday, September 28th, WPKN, (89.5 FM and www.wpkn.org) will present the second annual Road & Tracks celebration at Dragone Classic Motorcars, located at 176 Post Rd West in Westport, CT. Co-owners of Milford-based Dr. Nick's Transmissions and Complete Auto Care, Nick Bragano and Mark Mushin, are among this years sponsors and a percentage of the proceeds will go to benefit "KEYS: Kids Empowered by Your Support" and WPKN, celebrating 50 years of broadcasting.  Did we mention there is also a day-long 150 mile Road Rally?

This year, in addition to a celebration of the radio station's 50th anniversary, held in a garage full of beautiful vintage automobiles, the event will also include a day-long, 150 mile Remarkable Radio Road Rally. Administered by a professional Rally Master, this will be a TSD (time, speed, distance) rally that will have up to one hundred vehicles vying to cover a multi-state course within a specified time frame.

The Rally will begin and end in Westport, and kicks off at 9:30 AM as part of a live broadcast of WPKN's "The Car Bob Show", featuring the station's automotive experts. The course is approximately 140 miles long and will be using both paved and unpaved (non car breaking) roads. An awards ceremony follows the rally's end at 4 PM, with trophies being awarded for several categories at Dragone's showrooms.

Once the tire smoke clears, it's on to the gala event, Road and Tracks II. Surrounded by collectible vintage and performance automobiles in the Dragone showroom and garage, the celebration, which begins at 7:30 PM, will feature live entertainment by the Edukated Fleas Ukulele Duo, Larry Urbon's Café Musette, and classic jazz with Rick Petrone. In addition to Dragone Classic Motorcars, sponsors include the law offices of Cohen and Wolf, Dr. Nick's Transmissions and Complete Auto Care, and the Fairfield University Quick Center for the Arts. Food and beverage sponsors are Nicholas Roberts Gourmet Bistro, Staffing by Mary Watters, Fountainhead Wine and Distillations, and Tito's Handmade Vodka. Proceeds from this event will benefit WPKN radio, and also "KEYS: Kids Empowered by Your Support."(www.keysmusic.org). Dr. Richard Epstein, chair of this event, says "WPKN is proud to help support this organization, whose mission is to bring one-to-one instrument lessons and group music instruction to under-served inner-city children in Bridgeport, CT".

WPKN, currently celebrating 50 years of continuous broadcasting, is a 10,000-watt non-commercial radio station founded in 1963 as the college radio station of the University of Bridgeport. While the studios and offices remain on the campus of the University of Bridgeport, in 1989 WPKN became an independent, non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. Since then WPKN has been a listener-supported community radio station, broadcasting at 89.5 FM. WPKN's terrestrial signal now serves a potential listenership of 1.5 million people in Connecticut, Long Island, and parts of New York and Massachusetts. Programs on WPKN include live and recorded music, news, public affairs, and spoken word, dedicated to providing the "Real Alternative" on the FM dial and internet.
