“They Called Me Lizzy…from Slavery to the White House” to be performed at Lauralton Hall

As part of the celebratory events recognizing the 150 Year Anniversary of the estate, Lauralton Hall is pleased to announce a live performance by the East Haddam Stage Company. The play, “They Called Me Lizzy…from Slavery to the White House” will be presented on the Lauralton campus on Monday, February 9th, 2015 at 7:00pm. This event is free and open to the public.

This East Haddam Stage Company’s production was written and directed by Kandie Carle. Actress Stephanie Jackson becomes Elizabeth “Lizzy” Keckly in this one-woman play on the life of a remarkable 19th century woman.  Madame Keckly was born into slavery, but through her tenacity and skills as dressmaker, purchased her freedom and launched her own business. She came to the attention of Mary Todd Lincoln, became her dressmaker (and stylist) as well as confidante and friend. With interest in Elizabeth Keckly's life heightened by inclusion in Spielberg's movie Lincoln, the public will have a chance to experience a much fuller view of this extraordinary woman. In this 1-hour presentation, join Ms. Jackson as the story of Lizzy unfolds, full of twists and turns, bravery and remarkable resilience. EHSCO has been touring the show since 2006, throughout the eastern US, from Boston to North Carolina, as well as Canada, and is thrilled to be sharing it with the Lauralton Hall community.

"Absolutely fabulous. She got a standing ovation and I’ve been getting nothing but great comments from the 100 people who were there for the sold out performance," states Catherine Elliott, Director, Asa Waters Museum, Millbury, MA.

Lauralton Hall is located at 200 High Street, Milford. This event is free and open to the public. Advanced reservations are requested by visiting www.lauraltonhall.org/lizzy or contact Sue Bonaventura at marketing@lauraltonhall.org for more information.
