Make Snowshoes at CT Audubon Fairfield, Feb. 3

The Connecticut Audubon Society Center at Fairfield offers a Snowshoe Making workshop on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 1 to 2:30pm.

Participants will construct their own decorative snowshoes -- and learn a useful winter survival skill.

The event will be held at the CT Audubon's Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street, Fairfield.

Children must be accompanied by a participating adult

Members: $10 per child/adult team; non-members: $15 per child/adult team

Back in the “olden days,” snowshoes were considered vital survival equipment in areas that experienced deep winter snow. Although often used for sport today, they are also enjoyed as wall displays, evoking the woodsy outdoors and rustic traditions.

Working in teams, children with a participating adult will be provided with all the basics needed to create a pair of back-country snowshoes made from white pine boughs. While these snowshoes are intended to be decorative, learning the skills to build a makeshift pair could actually come in handy if unexpectedly caught in deep-snow conditions.
