Appreciating the Administrative Assistant

Often overlooked and underappreciated, the administrative professional or secretary is usually the first person a visitor to a company will see.  She (or he) is really the “front line” of a company and can frequently set the tone for a meeting or interaction with a visitor, client, vendor, or even boss.

Recognizing the value of this role, Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam, working with Mary Barrett, past president of the National Secretaries’ Association, and C. King Woodbridge, president of Dictaphone created the holiday we celebrate today. Administrative Professionals Day is also known as Secretaries’ Day and was first observed in 1952.

Administrative Professionals' Day is a day to stop and recognize the contributions our administrative professionals and secretaries make to the companies we work for or run.  A card, some flowers, or a small gift is a great way to let your administrative assistant know how much you appreciate her or his contribution, and that they are a valued member of your team.  A few greeting card companies even print Administrative Assistants’ Day cards!
