The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, recognizes the preceding year's notable books for children with annual awards. The Randolph Caldecott Medal is awarded to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children, who must be an American citizen or resident of the United States, and who may or not be the author of the book. The award is named in honor of nineteenth century English illustrator, Randolph Caldecott, and dates back to 1939.
You might be surprised to learn that many of our favorite children's books were awarded this medal â Madeline, Make Way for Ducklings, Where the Wild Things Are, Frog & Toad are Friends, Jumanjii, and many others too numerous to mention. This year's Caldecott winner is Locomotive by Brian Floca.
This is a non-fiction picture book that introduces, in great detail, America's early railroads.
The experience of riding the Intercontinental Railroad in 1869 comes alive with details of the trip: the sounds, smells, strength, and motion all coming alive.
This is a book to be shared over and over, full of information but truly an experience not to be missed.
