Stratford's East Coast Meets the West

As I was beach combing at Long Beach in Stratford, i thought about the school children I often see in the warmer weather studying Marine Biology hands on.  It made me think how fortunate we are to have access to the Long Island Sound.

It led me to think about people living in places that are no where near a shore line - like in the dessert.   When I arrived home, I sent a photo of what I found to a High School Art Teacher who works in a dessert town in California and asked her whether she would be interested in bringing a part of Stratford into her classroom’s curriculum.

I quickly heard back, “Yes, please”.  A friend on the West Coast donated some objects typical found on the West Coast and the Art project “Beach Combing” began when students returned from their Winter break.

Starting with pencil drawings and sculptures, the class will also work in watercolor.  You can see from the initial work, how intrigued and excited they are to discover what drifted to Long Beach.

Spending time at my home town beach and connecting with others to share some of the beauty of Stratford was a treasure.
