Milford Schools Redistricting Boundaries Set at 3/23 Special Meeting

At its special meeting on Monday evening, the Milford Board of Education voted and passed a new redistricting plan for the Milford Public Schools elementary community. The new boundaries will be implemented with the start of the 2015-16 academic year in Milford. For those who have been following the subject, the plan approved last night has been called '4C'.

An additional modification (4D) was added and approved, (also known as the Minuteman Drive option). Both of these options can be viewed here by clicking on the map icon, left. [You can magnify the size of the maps to view more detail; for those wishing to view the Minuteman Drive slide, please know a sharper image has been requested and will be uploaded immediately upon receipt].

In addition, the Board approved a 'grandfathering' allowance whereby current Gr. 4 students who would be redistricted out of their current sister school pairing in the new redistricting plan will have the option to attend one of their current sister schools for the 5th grade year only. This allowance would be in place for 2015-16 only. Students affected by this allowance will be provided with specific information and instructions.

We ask for your patience as we work to verify and establish accurate street lists and create clear and concise school boundary maps. This information will be provided as quickly as possible. Notification letters to parents specifying the school assignments for all elementary students for the 2015-16 school year are expected to be distributed in the next few weeks.

The redistricting project has been under discussion by the board for nearly a year and was tied to a set of requirements defined as essential in moving the district forward. These were:

  • A return to the K-5 configuration in all elementary schools.
  • Implementing a redistricting plan throughout the elementary system to establish balanced enrollment and equity in program space across the eight elementary buildings.
  • Decentralizing the Milford Preschool program by having it operate in a minimum of three schools.
  • Authorizing district officials to explore and develop College and Career Pathways programming for the Gr. 6-12 continuum and to begin exploring enhanced programming for grades K-5.

Now that this phase of the redistricting process is complete, school officials will be working hard to ensure a smooth transition for students, families, and staff.
