Milford Schools Announce New Assistant Superintendent

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Elizabeth Feser is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jeffrey Burt to the post of Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for the Milford Public School district. The position became available when Michael Cummings tendered his resignation in order to take an administrative position in the Fairfield Public Schools.

Mr. Burt has 23 years of experience as a professional educator and administrator in Connecticut and is well-versed in the evolution of education delivery in our state. His career began in September 1992 as a teacher in the Darien Public School district. In 2006, Mr. Burt took on a more progressive educational position and served as an assistant principal in the Montville Public School system. From there, he became deeply involved in curriculum work as the Curriculum Leader in social studies in the Fairfield Public Schools, a position he held for six years. For the past two years, Mr. Burt has served as Assistant Superintendent in the Vernon Public School system.

Mr. Burt received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Wooster (Ohio) in 1991 with a major concentration in history. He then received a Master of Arts degree in Education (Social Studies) from Columbia University in 1992, followed by a Sixth Year certificate in Administrative Leadership from Sacred Heart University in 2005.

Mr. Burt has proven to be a strong instructional leader. He has led extensive curriculum development in two districts, guiding and facilitating teachers in the writing of both curriculum and common assessments. He has worked tirelessly to remove teacher isolation, developing multiple and continuous opportunities for staff to collaborate in the improvement of instruction, and to engage in purposeful professional learning. His work with principals and teachers in implementing the new teacher evaluation model has increased collaboration, and led staff to see the model as one of growth. He also led the development and implementation of standards-based report cards in K-5.

Implementation and use of technology across his district has been a key factor in Mr. Burt’s career thus far. In his current district he introduced IPads in grades K-2 and Chromebook carts in schools across the district, as well as fueled the acquisition of a technology based student information system and student assessment system.

Communication and visibility are two of Mr. Burt’s greatest strengths according to colleagues and supervisors. Mr. Burt is also described as a strong collaborator and a ‘leader on the ground’ with a sincere, genuine interest in the students and the community he serves. His current Superintendent stated, “He is articulate, knowledgeable, organized, and able to see the big picture. He is all about instruction with the goal of insuring students experience the best learning.”

“It truly is an honor to be named the next Assistant Superintendent in Milford,” said Burt. “Throughout my career, I have worked with outstanding educators who have taught me the importance of being purposeful in what we do, knowing our impact on children – all children. As I join the Milford Public Schools team, I will work to create positive relationships with staff, students, parents and the community, and strive to sustain and grow the high quality education that exists in the schools.”

Elizabeth Feser, Superintendent of the Milford Public schools shared her enthusiasm at Mr. Burt assuming the role of Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. “Mr. Burt has a proven record of improving and strengthening teaching and learning K-12. He brings much expertise in curriculum, instruction and assessment, but equally important, a leadership style that is collaborative. He is passionate about children, all children. I believe he will contribute greatly to the work of the system aimed at all children thriving in supportive learning environments.”

Mr. Burt and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of four daughters. He officially will begin his post in Milford on August 1.
