Lauralton Hall Freshman to Perform at All-State Festival

Freshman to Perform at All-State Festival

A Lauralton freshman has joined the ranks of Connecticut's top high school musicians. Cellist Ella "Minnie" Seo '20 has been selected to participate in the 2017 All-State Music Festival. Sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators Association (CMEA), the festival takes place March 30 – April 1 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

Minnie began the road to All-State last fall as she prepared for the November audition for Regionals. The audition required a solo performance, scales, and sight-reading. Minnie was selected and performed in January at the CMEA Southern Regional Music Festival in Middletown.

Immediately following Regionals, Minnie began preparing for the more-challenging audition for All-State. Only those students who participate at the regional level are eligible to audition for the statewide event.

"CMEA festivals are highly competitive, so it's quite an accomplishment -- particularly for a freshman -- to be performing," said Margy Sargent, Chair of Fine Arts at Lauralton. "We are so proud of Minnie for her dedication and for representing Lauralton at such a prestigious event."

Minnie, who began playing cello at age five, said that she dedicates about four hours a week to instruction (between Lauralton's orchestra class and private lessons) and eight to ten hours a week to practice Minnie also is a member of the Norwalk Youth Symphony and plays chimes with Milford United Percussion.

At the All-State event, Minnie will spend three days at the Connecticut Convention Center where students rehearse under the direction of renowned conductors from across the United States. The orchestra will perform in concert on Saturday, April 1 at 2:00 p.m.

At Lauralton, students have many opportunities to enhance their music skills and participate in a variety of performing arts. Check out all of the fine arts programs at Lauralton here!
