St. Mary School Milford off to a bustling start!

St. Mary School Milford students are busy with projects & field trips and our parents are coming together and volunteering to ensure our events are successful and most importantly - unite the entire school community. Here are some highlights:

Root Beer Floats -  Miss Nolan's 2nd graders had a fun class making root beer floats to go along with their science lesson! Involving the students with creative hands on activities is vital to engaging students and making learning fun! You know the saying “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn” – Ben Franklin.

Celebrating Johnny Appleseed - To help celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday, our 3rd grade students baked apple pizzas and made other apple snacks. This is a tradition Mrs. Birge & Mrs. Dunne enjoy AND the students love it!

Helen Keller & Sign Language - Mrs. Adler's 5th grade reading class just finished a story about a deaf boy and his entrance into a school for the deaf to learn a trade. After the story, Mrs. Adler took it a step further and introduced the children to sign language. They learned the ASL manual alphabet, how to say "Hi, my name is .." as well as learned numbers 1-10. They then finished the unit by watching "The Miracle Worker". The kids all agree that it was really interesting and they learned a lot!

Milford Bank Field Trip - We are so very thankful for our friends at The Milford Bank for hosting our kindergarten’s field trip last week. The students learned the basics about banking and even got a peek into the vault!

Milford Historical Society Field Trip - Our third grade class recently walked to The Milford Historical Society for a visit. The annual field trip is one where students learn all about life in Milford back in the colonial times.  The children even got to take a lesson on writing with a quill pen!  As always, shopping at the gift shop was the highlight.

St. Mary School Honors Two St. John Neumann Award Recipients - On Sunday, September 28th at the Aqua Turf in Southington, the Office of Catholic Schools hosted the 37th Annual HOPES Dinner.  This celebration is dedicated to the men and women who have given so generously of their time & talent in support of Catholic school education in the Archdiocese of Hartford by serving their parish schools.  More than 100 volunteers were honored with the 2014 St. John Neumann Award for their unyielding commitment to supporting their school's initiatives. St. Mary School in Milford is thrilled to congratulate recipients Amani Zabski & Ellie Mullaney.

A mom to a current student & an alum, Amani has worn many hats over the last 12 years.  She was an officer on the Home School Association Board, Room Mom, Chairperson to the Elf Store, Publicity Chairperson, spearheaded the launch of a new school website and most recently produced all of the school's many videos. Ellie is an active member of St. Mary Parish and the St. Mary School Grandparents Club.  Ellie volunteers whenever you ask and will do whatever you need, and always with a smile!  For years she was the Bingo Treasurer and you can always find her at the school's many events – usually in her favorite place, the kitchen!  The award was presented to them from Archbishop Leonard Blair, Superintendent Dr. Dale Hoyt and Asst. Superintendent Maria Maynard. SMS is a community of families who believe in their Catholic School and pour their heart and soul into it – we are truly blessed!

The St. Mary School Milford Carnival and Car Raffle were a huge success and fun was had by the entire school community and town! Everyone enjoyed delicious food, baked goods, 50/50 raffles, exciting rides & games, and a chance in our car raffle. There were fireworks and live bands as well.

Congratulations to Milford resident Bob Hunter for winning this year’s Car Raffle. St. Mary Church Parishioners and active grandparents to 13 grandchildren, Bob & Kathy were actually in the market for a new car and had been shopping for one the previous week! They purchased their raffle tickets on the last possible day after heeding Father Aidan Donahue’s warning that time was ticking away to purchase last minute tickets. So, on the day they purchased the ticket, they won and it was Kathy’s birthday! Seems like it was meant to be! Second prize of an Apple ipad went to Bruce McCord and the $250 Shoprite Gift Card was awarded to Linda Kiley. All three winners are Milford residents!

We invite you to come by and see what we are all about!  Schedule a tour and let us give you a peek into a “day in the life at St. Mary School!” We welcome you to learn more about us at www.saintmaryschoolmilford.org.
