Dear Friends,

I am writing to highlight some things in Congress and our community that I hope you will find helpful.

1. Schedules that Work Act
2. Ovarian Cancer Resolution
3. 5th Anniversary of Dodd-Frank
4. 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid
5. Connecticut Events and Announcements

Schedules that Work Act

Congresswoman DeLauro announces the introduction of the
Schedules that Work Act, which would protect American workers
from unfair scheduling practices.

Unstable, unpredictable, and rigid scheduling practices place unnecessary burdens on hard-working American families. Being on call without being guaranteed hours, being assigned split shifts of non-consecutive hours, being sent home early without pay or being punished for requesting a schedule change is unfair to workers and their families.

That is why, along with Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA) and 75 other Members of Congress, I introduced the Schedules that Work Act. This critical legislation would protect low-wage workers and provide them with the ability to plan ahead so they can look after their families or loved ones or go the doctor without worrying about losing their job.

Ovarian Cancer Resolution

It was an honor to join Congressman Steve Israel (NY-3) as well as Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) to introduce a resolution designating September 2015 as “National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.” Ovarian Cancer is one of the leading killers of women in the United States. This bipartisan resolution will help raise awareness and promote the need for research, early detection, and prevention efforts.

5th Anniversary of Dodd-Frank

July 21, 2015 marked the fifth anniversary of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, known as Dodd-Frank. After the 2008 financial crisis, Dodd-Frank helped bring much needed protections to American families by providing increased oversight and requiring increased accountability by Wall Street. This bill created critical agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and expanded the authority of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Congress must work to strengthen Dodd-Frank so that American jobs, retirement savings, and investments are protected.

50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid

July 30, 2015 marks the fiftieth anniversary of President Johnson signing Medicare and Medicaid into law. Connecticut’s Third District has nearly 250,000 people who benefit from these programs and we have seen how they have been instrumental in alleviating poverty for seniors and low-income individuals.

Unfortunately, there have been repeated attempts to cut Medicaid and privatize Medicare. That is simply unacceptable. Congress must work to support and expand these critical programs to make sure they are available for our kids and grandkids.

Connecticut Events and Announcements

E-cigarettes

Congresswoman DeLauro joins Congresswoman Esty at the Boys and Girls Club of
New Haven to discuss the Stop Tobacco Sales to Youth Act of 2015.
The bill would ensure e-cigarettes are not sold to minors.

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty joined me in introducing the Stop Tobacco Sales to Youth Act of 2015, which would ensure that Internet or mail order sales of e-cigarettes are treated the same way as traditional tobacco products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), youth use of e-cigarettes and cigars has drastically increased over the past three years. As a nation, we have a responsibility to make sure these companies cannot get away with selling harmful products to our children through the Internet.

Connecticut Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry

Congresswoman DeLauro visits the Connecticut Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry
to hear about what Congress can do to help end hunger in America.

Every day, families across our country are faced with the possibility of not being able to put food on the table. I recently had the privilege of visiting at the Connecticut Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry, which allowed me to hear firsthand from people about their experiences with hunger and the need for Congress to act.

We have a responsibility to make sure that critical programs like the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP) are fully funded and that families have the resources they need to live healthy lives.

Infrastructure Investment

Congresswoman DeLauro joins Reps. Larson and Shuster as well as state
officials to discuss the need for a long-term highway bill.

It was an honor to join Congressman John Laron (D-CT) as he hosted Mayor Pedro Segarra (Hartford), Deputy Commissioner Anna Barry (ConnDOT), and House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster to discuss the need for sustainable, long-term infrastructure investment in Connecticut. Congress must pass a long-term highway funding bill to provide states like Connecticut the certainty and ability to plan and execute necessary projects like improving bridges, roads, and transit systems.
