Officials Honor Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week at Pacific House Shelter

State Senator Carlo Leone, State Representative Terry Adams and Stamford Mayor David Martin served a meal at Pacific House emergency shelter on Monday evening to honor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.  The shelter, which houses and feeds up to 110 homeless men and young adults each evening, serves the communities of Greenwich, Stamford, Darien and New Canaan.

During the 45 minute meal service, the officials worked together with members of The Lockwood Group, who prepared a meal of chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, vegetable medley and homemade brownies for 50 men.

“My son, Zach, participated in serving a meal at Pacific House with his civics class at Greenwich High School,” said Lockwood President and CEO, Matthew Schecter.  “We decided it would be a great experience for our company members too.”

The officials rolled up their sleeves to deliver the nutritious meal to the homeless men and young adults. Afterwards each had an opportunity to speak to the men.

“I know what you go through, and see what Pacific House is doing to help, said Rep. Adams.  “It’s our job to work for you, reach out to us if you need something.”

“I’ve been involved with Pacific House for many years, it is one of the premiere organizations that supports people in need.  It is our pleasure to be here, and when we see the needs by coming here, it’s easier to fight for your resources and services,” said Carlo Leone.

“Thank you for this opportunity to serve you,” said Mayor Martin.  “By being here it gives the community a reminder that there are many parts of our city, not just the fancy, upscale parts.  There are people in need too, and sometimes everybody needs some help.”

“I suppose it has become natural for many of us to question the motivations of our elected officials,” said Andrew Barer, Pacific House Director of Development. “These gentlemen all have a long history of helping Pacific House in many ways. They have demonstrated that their interest in helping the homeless is truly genuine.”

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is held each year the week prior to Thanksgiving.  At a time when we traditionally think about what we are thankful for, compassion for our neighbors in need often comes to mind.  Those wishing to make a donation to Pacific House shelter should visit their website: www.PacificHouse.org.
