Former Connecticut resident Newman is an All-American triathlete, eight-times over who was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in March 2008. At 46 years old, she was told that she had less than a 10-percent chance of living if she did not begin treatment immediately.
Standing at 5ft 3.5” and weighing only 105 pounds, Newman had also been hiding an ongoing eating disorder she developed at college. Cancer was her wake-up call. Despite undergoing debilitating treatment for advanced breast cancer she managed to train. Incredibly, over a four-month period following her diagnosis, Newman completed seven triathlons, while getting chemotherapy. Newman earned a silver medal at the 2012 Age Group Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. She followed up that performance a year later, by setting a triathlon world record at Huntsman Senior Games in Utah.
Featured on the Today Show twice, her uplifting message of hope is the crux of her book- Just Three Words. Her gripping, candid and at times humorous story, reveals the power our words have - to shatter or empower. Newman exposes the raw agonies of anorexia, her battle with bulimia, and fight to overcome cancer. This memoir captures her indomitable spirit which - against all odds - survives, triumphs and finds the purpose in it all.
