The horrors of World War II, three resilient women, and their haunted pasts and closely held secrets form the nucleus of this mesmerizing and profound novel. Set at the end of WWII, Marianne von Lingenfels returns to the once-grand castle of her husband's family, now in ruins after years of war. The widow of a resister who was murdered in the failed plot to assassinate Hitler, Marianne 's quest is to uphold her pledge to her husband's co-conspirators: to find and protect their wives, her fellow resistance widows. The twists and turns involved in assembling the group, the misconceptions that arise and the rifts that appear in this dramatic and nuanced picture of war illustrate the power of the human spirit to survive, love, and ultimately forgive.

Jessica Shattuck is the New York Times Bestselling author of "The Women in the Castle," "The Hazards of Good Breeding" (a New York Times Notable Book and finalist for the PEN/Winship Award), and "Perfect Life." Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Glamour, Mother Jones, and Wired among others. A graduate of Harvard University, she received her MFA from Columbia University. Shattuck now lives with her husband and three children in Brookline, Mass.
